Absolutely worst-case scenario for a resolution to this mess.
Once again I'll lay the blame at the feet of the Irish. If Notre Dame had joined the Big Ten, then there would be no room for Nebraska and the Big 12 would have stabilized with Colorado leaving and BYU joining. When Notre Dame stayed independent, Missouri all but begged the Big Ten for an invite which made Nebraska nervous since they knew Texas was talking with the PAC-10. Before Nebraska left the Big 12, they tried to get members to pledge their media rights to the conference and Texas declined.

Notre Dame is still out there and the Big East looks like it could crumble. That might force Notre Dame to join the Big Ten but the Irish would most likely need to join with a partner. Pittsburgh is already gone to the ACC so Missouri is the next best candidate. Missouri does not want to pledge six years to the Big 12 only to have Notre Dame decide to join the Big Ten and then have another school like Rutgers join the Big Ten with the Irish.

I agree with others in that its time to play hardball with Missouri. Also, that BYU should just sign on the dotted line and join the Big 12. Then the Big 12 could mandate to Missouri, "we have nine members committing their T1 and T2 TV rights to the Big 12 - are you in or are you out". If Mizzou doesn't sign, let them join the SEC (if they really want them) or wait for the Big Ten acceptence letter from Jim Delany to arrive. But I bet Mizzou commits to the Big 12 - the Tigers are trying to have their cake and eat it too (play in the Big 12 until the Big Ten comes calling; if they ever do).

The question is, can the Big 12 issue an ultimatum like that and still collect the $40 million in exit fees that Missouri will owe if they leave voluntarily? I'm just a simple engineer...I don't understand these complex legal issues.

There's a lot of truth there. But it's also worth pointing out that the shady place in the SEC pays better than the shade in the Big 12. Also, Arkansas left the Texas shade some 20 years ago. The Razorbacks haven't won anything in the SEC but they are not interested in rejoining Texas in the Big 12 shade. Ever wonder why?

Before you huskers were blaming the longhorns and now you are blaming the Irish. Maybe the Big Ten should just kick out Nebraska to make room for the Notre Dame. Besides Nebraska is no longer an AAU school anyway. The Big 12 will take you back if you pony up the rest of your exit fee.

The Big 12 under that illustrious leader Dan Beebe did just that to a certain program donning the Scarlet and Cream in the summer of 2010. Remember the Big 12 loyalty oath that all had to agree to? And what was the deadline, a week or two? And exit fees were paid although at a reduced rate.

Why not just take the issue up for a conference vote? It's not like the Big 12 never had 11-1 voting outcomes before.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

You do realize that Notre Dame is not an AAU member either? Besides, will Nebraska get its AAU affiliation back if it rejoins the Big 12? Texas had a big hand in allowing Nebraska's AAU membership to come up for a vote in the first place. I doubt that can be undone.

As you probably know, I like to play spin the bottle to allocate blame when it comes to the Big 12's problems - so long as the bottle doesn't point to Nebraska. Earlier the bottle pointed to the Longhorns. The bottle has spun again and now it points to the Irish. Is there any doubt that if Notre Dame accepted their invitation to join the Big 12 that the conference would stabilize immediately? Missouri would suddenly pledge their allegiance to the Big 12 like they did in 2010 once no invitation from the Big Ten showed up in their mailbox. BYU would bolster the Big 12. Heck, TCU might even be welcome. The Big 12 would be back in black with Catholics, Mormons, Baptists, and Christians (Disciples of Christ-founders of TCU). The Lion and lamb will lie down together...but for the Irish and their dam independence. Blame the Irish!

                              • Bill Self on the border war...

Needless to say, Missouri's move did not make Kansas coach Bill Self happy. Late Tuesday night, Self told the Lawrence Journal-World that if Missouri goes through with a move to the SEC, he would probably decline to schedule Missouri in a non-conference game each season. That move would effectively kill the Border War (or Border Showdown, if you prefer an anesthetized and politically correct terminology) rivalry -- one of the and mostly deep historic and heated rivalries in college hoops. To wit:

“To me it’s a great rivalry, one of the best in college basketball without question, but I don’t think I would be interested in having a once a year game like I did when I was at Illinois, playing Missouri,” Self told the Journal-World on Tuesday night. [...] “If they choose to be somewhere other than with us and with the other schools that they’ve been a part of and could jeopardize the future of the other schools ... I’m not going to make a commitment now that we’d ever play again. I’m not saying we won’t. I’m certainly not going to pretend that we would.”
BYU will be KU's new and improved rival.
