  • I don't get it

University curators voted unanimously Tuesday night to consider leaving the Big 12 instead of committing to the league for the long term. The governing board's members agreed unanimously after a 4-hour closed meeting at the system's St. Louis campus to give Deaton authority to look elsewhere, specifically "any and all actions necessary to fully explore options on conference affiliation....which best serve the (school's) interest."

And Deaton, the conference's public face through its recent turmoil, is resigning as chairman of the Big 12's board of directors to avoid the obvious conflict of interest.

Just one day earlier, the conference announced that presidents and chancellors of the remaining nine members -- including Deaton -- had agreed to equal revenue sharing and to seek approval from each university to hand over the most lucrative television rights to the conference for six years.
So Deaton already agreed to the revenue sharing and pledging of rights, but the board wants to do this little dance anyway? Is there a genuine disagreement with the Deaton on this, or is Mizzou just going through the motions of exploring conference affiliation to placate their delusional fans?

If Chip Brown is to be believed (Ha!) and this really does revolve around showing high school football clips on the LHN, then it's the dumbest reason I've heard for leaving a conference to date. Both Texas and Missouri are tools.

OK Red Legger, I don't want to hear any reports of Kansas flirting with the ACC while we all wait out Missouri's "we aren't going to be a wallflower in all of this" moment.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It'd be a last resort or some sort of package w/ NotreDame or some such foolishness. Honestly, we're in the sweet spot. We've finally rassled the Whorns into a corner, the Big 12 is next up for teevee negotiations (a big raise), we keep our little Jayhawk Network, we're heading for a Big 12 East division that might be the easiest path to a BCS bowl available. We'll actually keep a lid on expenses beings Louisville is about as far away from Lawrence as Boulder. On top of that, Bill Self is looking at a Big 12 east w/ UofL/Cincy/WVU/KSU and licking his chops at his RPI. And if the Superconferences do come, we're probably next up for the Big 10. And through it all, we've kept some dignity and flew under the radar.I wouldn't trade our position for anyone else except the Domers.

Now, if the University would just allow Turner Gill to bring on 4 really bad arsed Juco defensive tackles some more speed at LBer, we'd be in the money.

Cough up the $35 million exit fee and GTFO. That's the consensus the Phog.net/Kusports. Everyone blames Bevo for this mess but from the start the Mulleted Minions have begging for a ticket elsewhere. Let em go. Besides, given frothing going on over on Phog.net, it'll make the Border WAR even more intense.

No, the Big 12 will not (and should not) boot Mizzou, you don't want Mizzou to weasel out of the $30+ million that they would have to pay the Big 12 in exit fees.

Having said that, the Big 12 needs to expand today -- preferably by 3 teams. They also should send notice to Mizzou that all schools must sign over their media rights deal by some date (maybe the 1st of November) or the conference will view not signing as notice that a team has chosen to leave the Big 12.

                            • Q&A with Deloss... here are some of the better parts:

Isn't that game [vs aTm] as important to Texas, too?

"That game - the rivalry game for us has always been Oklahoma. The A&M game's been a great game and all of that. And we may play 'em. But it's not something that we have to do. I think the Oklahoma game is something we have to do."
                              Ouch. A&M who?

On the Big 12 board's decision (Monday) to implement equal revenue sharing, are you pleased with that?

                              "Absolutely. We made the motion."

But did you see it coming? Was this something that was going to happen to the Big 12 eventually regardless?

"The thing that tipped me, our network helped. The other thing that changed my mind about it was the formula we had, if we kept that formula with the new TV contract we had with Fox and then we're obviously gonna get a new one with ABC/ESPN or somebody (in 2016) for the Tier 1 stuff, the money would have been so big. The division of monies between the institutions in the conference would be almost grotesque. So everybody's gonna get a big bump. We're getting a big bump with the Fox thing. And I think we're going from $13 million to $17 million. So it's a good thing."

Whether the criticism is coming from Texas A&M or Nebraska or the college football world at large, the perception is that Texas is being painted as the bad guy, the evil empire or whatever. Longhorn Network probably helps perpetuate that. Does that concern you as the man in charge here, that the Texas brand is taking a PR hit?

"We're good people. And we do it the right way. And we've got 550 kids that we love, and we treat them the way they're supposed to be treated. And we're in it for kids. We didn't do the Pac-12 (because of) the kids. It wasn't money, it wasn't anything else. We don't want to put our kids in airplanes and have them in airplanes half their life going back and forth.

"We've worked hard to save the Big 12 twice now. We happen to have a network which, we did, we told everybody for five years that, 'We're gonna do it, we're gonna do it, you ought to do it, too' - you know, we told 'em. Any time TV came up in a room, we said, 'We're gonna do our own third-tier network.' We've been open about it. And today they're looking for reasons, or somebody to blame. A&M's looking for a reason, and they've made their reason that we've got a second game on the network. You know? Nebraska had three last year. I've not heard one word about that.

"But it's an issue this year. And I've been a bad guy before, and I'm at an age where it doesn't bother me. We're doing the right thing. Every decision we're making, we're doing the right thing. We're doing the right thing for the conference, we're doing the right thing for the kids. If somebody wants to paint us as some awful people, then let 'em paint us."
Listen to Daddy Deloss... Texas is really the good guys here.

Someone at the Big 12 office told me it was "laughable" that Texas A&M is leaving because of financial reasons; that they're leaving to get out of the shadow of Texas.

                              "I don't know. I can't answer that."
Let me answer: Yes, aTm wants to be in the shadow of LSU, Bama, and even Arkansas now. They are just trading one shady place for another. Actually, "trading" is the wrong word. They are actually spending a lot of money (up to $30M) to buy a new shady place.
