delusional? what is delusional about Texas and its super friends creating a super conference where everyone is independent and make a kabillon dollars?"Be a philosopher. There's no way this happens. It just makes too much sense.Originally posted by shoganai View PostIt's a less-known fact, but ND and UT have been talking about this informally for at least a year or two.
The idea is that this would not be structured quite like a traditional conference. It would be designed to really be a type of "independent super conference" where the teams have a lot of leeway to do their own TV deals, and operate very autonomously, but get together on some formal scheduling agreements and some structured championships in the minor sports.
Because of its loose structure, obviously only certain types of teams would be eligible and be a good fit - teams that can, and want to basically be out there on their own for the most part, while enjoying an easier time scheduling.
ND, Texas, Oklahoma, and BYU are the four really obvious candidates. The service academies might join in too."To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

Delusional about a bunch of divas working together? Can't think of a thing that could go wrong. Nothing will go wrong... After a couple years Other super teams from very established conferences like USC, Ohio St, Michigan and Alabama will join the superfriends conference because they *might* make a million dollars more in football revenue. Soon every team will try and join the superfriends but only the cool kids will be let in.Originally posted by Babs View PostDelusional about a bunch of divas working together? If an invitation is extended and declined I think that would be the end of Coach Rose. He's not that happy about the WCC thing and declining something bigger and better would probably piss him off. No one brings up the basketball side of the coin but I'd wager it will play a decent factor in the decision.
I'm all for joining up unless UT is going to bail.

Does UT not worry about OU feeling like they have to go into the SEC also if aTm joins and the Big 12 looks pretty shaky? Texas is certainly a powerful school, but I'm not sure if it could stand up to the SEC grabbing aTm and OU. As it stands, the SEC has already won 5 straight BCS titles and if it starts gobbling up teams like the second biggest team in Texas, Florida State and OU, the rest of the conferences will just look like the minor leagues.Originally posted by Shaka View PostIf an invitation is extended and declined I think that would be the end of Coach Rose. When people thought the Super Pac thing was going to happen last year, I remember hearing Texas fans lamenting the fact they'd be playing conference games in Pullman and Corvallis. Texas's options are as follows:
1. The Super Pac, but it has the drawbacks listed above.
2. The Super Big 10, similar to the Super Pac, I'm not sure how much Texas wants be stuck playing Indiana and Minnesota.
3. The Super SEC, Texas doesn't want the SEC to raid its recruits.
4. Keeping the Big 12 together. Texas seems to be doing things that leads to the Big 12 falling apart.
5. Forming a loose conglomeration of teams that gives Texas scheduling ease in October and November and through which bowl tie-ins can be negotiated. The thing I need to be educated on with this is how Notre Dame would benefit at all from this arrangement beyond what they currently have. Is Notre Dame's bowl situation (besides its BCS tie-in) crappy? I don't get the impression that ND will ever have difficulty scheduling teams whenever they want. Or does ND view a loose conglomeration as a safeguard against a potential super-conference scenario? It amazed me last year when ND didn't blink when Nebraska was shifting to the Big 10 and a Super Pac was supposedly a done deal. Another thing, the only way ND can keep its numerous rivalry games and still be in anything resembling a conference is if it gets into some loose conglomeration like this. Even in the Big 10, ND would only have four open slots. It plays USC, Stanford and Navy every year and Pitt and BC almost every year -- not to mention Army. ND would have zero flexibility.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

From March 14, 2006Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View Post5. The thing I need to be educated on with this is how Notre Dame would benefit at all from this arrangement beyond what they currently have. Is Notre Dame's bowl situation (besides its BCS tie-in) crappy? .
When the next four-year Bowl Championship Series football contract comes into play starting with the 2006 season, the University of Notre Dame will have the opportunity to play one time each during that four-year window in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, the Toyota Gator Bowl, the Vitalis Sun Bowl and the Houston Bowl.
These options, which cover the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 seasons, are based in part on BIG EAST Conference relationships with the Toyota Gator Bowl, the Vitalis Sun Bowl and the Houston Bowl. For those four years, Notre Dame continues as part of the BIG EAST's secondary bowl package for those seasons in which it is not selected for a BCS game.
On that basis, Notre Dame most recently played in the Toyota Gator Bowl following the 1998 and 2002 seasons and in the Insight Bowl (in Phoenix, Ariz.) following the 2004 season.
The Toyota Gator Bowl, played on New Year's Day in Jacksonville, Fla., features an Atlantic Coast Conference squad as the host team that twice in four years will face a Big 12 Conference opponent and twice will meet a BIG EAST team or Notre Dame.
Similarly, the Vitalis Sun Bowl, played on New Year's Eve afternoon in El Paso, Texas, will feature a Pacific-10 Conference team as its host squad - with a Big 12 opponent in two of those years and a BIG EAST or Notre Dame team in the other two.
The alternating-selection agreement between the Gator and Sun Bowls is believed to be the first partnership of its kind in postseason bowl history.
The BIG EAST relationship with the Houston Bowl begins in 2006 and will feature a BIG EAST team against a team from the Big 12 Conference each of the next four years. The game will be played annually on Dec. 31 in Reliant Stadium in Houston.
The AT&T Cotton Bowl, played on New Year's Day in Dallas, Texas, normally features teams from the Big 12 and the Southeastern Conferences - but the new, four-year Cotton Bowl/SEC agreement permits the Cotton Bowl to select Notre Dame once in the next four years in place of an SEC team.
"As much as we would hope our football program will be good enough in any given year to play in a Bowl Championship Series game, if that doesn't happen we will have a series of extremely viable options in excellent locations against opponents from major conferences," said Notre Dame athletics director Kevin White.
"Notre Dame has a great history with the Cotton Bowl, and we've had excellent experiences in Jacksonville twice in recent years. In addition, the potential opportunities to play in El Paso and Houston would take us into a state in which we have a sizeable alumni presence and in which we expect to continue to have a major recruiting presence.""Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. It has become apparent that a man can, within limits, follow his inclinations within the arms of the Church if he does so discreetly." - The Walking Drum

If you and Babs want to call anyone delusional, it should be the Texas and ND admins. As links in this very thread show, they're the ones that have come up with this idea, not us.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View Postdelusional? what is delusional about Texas and its super friends creating a super conference where everyone is independent and make a kabillon dollars?
And, if you believe that a bunch of successful independents making scheduling and bowl agreements is more delusional than Texas A&M thinking it will be more successful in the SEC, then I have a sales presentation I'd like you to attend...

It is mainly TAMU. The way the aggies are acting reminds me of the episode of South Park when the canadians go on strike...Originally posted by Babs View PostThe Big 12 already looks shaky. The administration really blew it during the conference realignment.

The Super Pac can still happen without Texas. If OU and OSU buy in then Scott won't have any problem find another two schools to come along as well.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThe super Pac isn't an option unless Larry Scott backs off his stance towards the LHN."Take it to the Bank"
