  • mrs. myboynoah has become a partial mullah on Sunday TV. Nothing until after 6:00 pm. I don't like it, but she's so great and I love her so much that it's a small price to pay. Plus, she's very reasonable and allows us to watch BYU games if they are on.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I am sure she is great.

Her Sunday TV policy makes no sense, unfortunately.

It makes sense to her, and that's really all that matters.

          Dang, that's rough.

My wife has set no TV policy. I overheard her telling her sisters that her reasoning is that the more time I spend watching TV during any day of the week is less time I spend pestering her. Her sisters congratulated her for he policy.

Have you ever asked her why she chose 6PM as the line of demarcation for Sundays?

There is precedent. I believe the Jewish sabbath begins and ends at sundown.

Because Masterpiece theatre doesn't start until after 6pm. Sometimes you are a bit obtuse. Wait, do you do any work in Brazil?

She came to me a few months back and proposed this arrangement. She wanted to eliminate something that she felt distracted from a more worshipful approach to our sabbath observance. She made a good point that we watch an awful lot of TV the rest of the week and turning our focus more to us, our family, and The Gospel without that distraction for roughly 4-5 hours each week wasn't too much to ask. I could see she felt very strongly about it, so I agreed. Now that doesn't mean we don't use the TV to watch old family videos or other Gospel-related shows. Also, like I said, she gave in to watching BYU games if they come on Sundays.

Honestly, right now I'm not that happy with it; I can be kind of lazy and it's much easier to just turn on the TV and veg. But I have found that this is providing us with time to work with the boys on DTG, to do our HTing, to hold FHE, and other activities like that. I'm willing to give this a try and see where it leads. Plus, she's so great and her motives are pure.

Oh she can say whatever she wants, but its all about Masterpiece Theater.

I can't remember if she chose that. In fact, I doubt she did. That may have been her compromise to me. 6 pm or around that time is about the time we eat dinner and it offers a transition to evening and the upcoming week. At least that is how it seems to be with us. The boys do some homework, we catch up on the news, watch a show or movie, settle down.

                          • NO TV at all in my house until I was 7. No Sunday TV ever growing up. Except with the sound turned off and listening intently for my mom to come down the stairs.

That is how I first learned to hate John Elway watching his patented comebacks with the sound off.

On a related note, we had family home evening on Sunday AND Monday nights. We hated it so much.

                            • If I wanted to listen to y'alls self-absorbed idiotic maunderings on religious quirks, I would head over to the Foyer or whatever it is y'all call your mutual bitching and self-congratulation session.

Instead, in the Stadium, I would prefer to listen to y'alls self-absorbed idiotic maunderings on football.

                              That is all.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

Guilty here too. My whole apartment didn't watch tv on Sundays and very rarely did homework on Sundays. I kept that rule through med school, and that was with all of our exams on Mondays.
Here is what I think happens...at least in my case. I took things very literally. When the prophet said no R rated movies, I took that as God telling me not to watch R rated movies. If my bishop tells me not to study on Sunday, then God is telling me that. You don't say no to God.
The disconnect is that God really isn't saying any of these things. He has a deeper message, but one that doesn't quite fit into simple one line commandments. It was really easy for me to just follow rules--tell me what to do or not to do, and I'll follow it. It's been much tougher for me to figure out the grays. The church is geared to teenagers with that mindset, and it think its succeeding as they stay relatively out of trouble through their teens and then go on a mission. But inevitably, everyone runs into grays. The world-shattering nature of this can be big when you don't face this reality early (as is really discouraged in the church).
This is a pretty insightful post. Esp. "the church is geared to teenagers" line.

Just wanted to point that out.
