Most private universities also use tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars of public funds per year. It's probably the best government expense I can think of. The "unique" ones don't, however.

From an ESPN article posted today:

Among the 120 large football schools, only 22 of them made a profit in 2010, Fulks said. The rest needed money allocations from the general university fund or government to cover their expenses. Fulks noted that athletic revenue currently comes from three primary sources: Ticket sales account for 29 percent, booster donations 26 percent and redistribution of television revenue 20 percent.

The federal government is indirectly subsidizing the athletic departments of 98 large football schools.

I don't get BYU fan atheists. I know there are quite a few. But it defies common experience. Like how mole rats are cold blooded. (Note, mole rats are awesome, beloved creatures among scientists, full of lessons about the universe; so, there's no intent here to be disrespectful by referring to you as a type of rat.)

I despise mormonism, but still can't stop caring about BYU's football team. Part of it is that its my alma mater and part of my personal history no matter where I might be now. Another part is that I've been a huge fan since I was small kid.

I don't trust your recollection, especially when it comes to BYU. You initially implied that BYU didn't receive federal dollars hoping that nobody would follow up on this falsehood. Without further evidence, it can be reasonably assumed that BYU receives as much federal money as other institutions of it's size and stature.

Source suggested Big 12 might consider adding Louisville AND West Virginia to go to 11. Not great, but Big Ten lived with it for years.

I love dumb statements like that from so-called journalists. Yes because staying at 11 is certainly the end game here.
