To be honest, I haven't really paid too much attention to the Big XII outside of Oklahoma and Texas. It has the reputation of being a high powered passing game offensive league that kills defenses, but is this just because of Oklahoma? Have they set the standard for all of the other programs in the conference to do the same? I know OK St has a similarly built offense, is this the type of offense BYU will need to compete? I worry about BYU's ability to attract that much speed.

It's hard to know exactly what happened, but from what I have read, it seems like Texas and OU were the biggest factors in preventing further Big 12 expansion after TCU was added. They really screwed over their conference mates by holding the Big 12 back after the last round of realignment and then bolting when a sweet offer came. Part of me wonders if this wasn't all part of a long-term plan by them.

      • 1278 pages (not posts, pages) in this thread. Congrats on nearing the end of a long journey. I really thought this would happen back in 2011. While many poo-poo the "leftovers" of the Big 12, I think it might be a good thing that the prima donna's of the conference are gone, and the infusion of new blood can help grow a healthy Big 12 going forward.

I doubt recruiting will be significantly better than it already is. The honor code stands in the way.

But, as BlueK points out, inclusion means athletes who commit to BYU and to the honor code will be less reluctant to decommit so that they can play at a different P5 school.

We lose a ton of outstanding LDS kids to P5 schools. Did you see what Cameron Latu did yesterday at Bama? Former BYU commit.

            • Yeah, we will be able to keep some of the commits that we are losing to other p5 schools, but we probably still lose commits like Latu to perennial powers like Alabama and those interested in academics to Stanford.

                • More than anything with respect to recruiting is it would
help level the playing field with Utah for in-state and LDS recruits where it is more of a zero sum game.

They won't have to hit on 100% for it to significantly improve.

                    • I think Texas recruiting will improve. Lots of honor code type kids and parents in these parts

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yeah, that will happen... Why would a kid not go to a top school in their field if they can?

                            • So it is it too soon to speculate on the divisions in the new Big 12? How about this?:

West (or BYU and the Texas guys):
                              BYU
                              TTU
                              TCU
                              Baylor
                              Houston
                              OSU*

The Texas teams get to play each other each year. And lots of great road trip games for Uncle Ted and Moli.

                              East (or the rest):
                              KU
                              KSU
                              ISU
                              WVU
                              Cincy
                              UCF

Keeps KU/KSU together. Maybe WVU and Cincy will become rivals.

                              *Yes, OSU is in Texas....
