I hate to say it, but having 4 Pac 10 schools coming in will kick the shit out of what BYU will have coming in, there will be no contest. Over the long term, BYU doesn't stand a chance. "Hey, you get to play Wyoming, San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico in Provo next year, can't pass that up! Playing (insert four Pac 10 schools on Utah's home schedule) is totally overrated." I'm sorry, but BYU is directly in competition with Utah for a number of recruits every year, and this yearly poo poo platter of the above mentioned teams along with CSU just isn't going to cut it.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

It's not that. You just never make an appearance in here. It is like Hot Lunch venturing into the Foyer. It just hardly ever happens.

That's totally why the MWC invited Boise.

Take your terminal bottom-rung schools from any top conference, and what do they offer the elite athlete?? A losing record and no post-season play? Utah has has played well in recent years, but it is just the nature of football that a decent team can win against a superior team from time to time, and no one is convinced that Utah is anything more than a decent team. Basically they need to reestablish their creds in the new conference before they are going to have serious recruiting clout over BYU. But as Boise has demonstrated, once you demonstrate that you have developed a superior football culture, even a cow-town can attract great players. I don't think Utah has half the coaching prowess as Boise.

Different teams get their invites for different reasons. Utah got invited because they are a decent team, in the right location, without religious baggage. Boise has belonged in the MWC for a few years now. It is a shame that they won't get a year or two in the conference with Utah, though I guess that is lucky for Utah. I'm sure Utah wouldn't have gotten the invite to the prom had Boise been there to embarrass them over several consecutive years.

Robin, you're playing coy with us regarding your football knowledge. That was a kick-ass post.

Great observation. Particularly considering Utah has a history of getting up for the big games, but laying an egg in games they should win. So the huge question is can they win consistently, week in week out?

Don't let him fool you. I think Robin knows as much about football as SU posts about football and posts as much about football as SU knows about football.

That is the big question. Week in and week out, Utah will be facing much much better competition. Can they sustain it? Will the beating they take from teams that are just as big or bigger and just as fast or faster take a toll on Utah. I am one that thinks Utah's recruiting will improve with the Pac-12 logo behind them so they will be able to recruit bigger faster athletes for that type of schedule.

But at least we will be able to see us kick their sorry asses on TV, as will a lot of other sports fans across the country.

Wrong. I have only neenered about being right in all my predictions concerning the expansion follies. About BYU fans' current state of abject shock, misery and disbelief I have only tried to offer encouragement and support and a desire to continue our mutually profitable association. See, e.g., my response to creek's end of innocense thread.

                              Stewart Mandel, Sports Illustrated:

From the outset, Scott said he'd be equally comfortable with a 12-team league. While it's not nearly as big of a splash as the proposed Pac-16, it still allows the conference to start a championship game (which Scott very much wants), adds a very solid football program (I personally believe Utah, once it gets its expected invite, will contend for the league title within two years of its arrival) and a top 20 television market (Colorado/Denver) in advance of next year's contract negotiations. As the Big 12 learned this week, there is a lot of television money to be had out there, and Scott will undoubtedly elicit a bidding war.
