I don't think you can keep that mentality. I don't know if they will be able to compete is they do. For every Alex Smith and Eric Weddle there are 2 or 3 diamonds in the rough that are awful. New doors will be open to them in regards to recruiting. I think they will see and immediate impact on recruiting. The next recruiting class will play there entire career int he Pac-10. They need to bring in as much talent and depth as they can and I think they should re-evaluate some of the recruits they have already offered.Originally posted by wally View PostI hope we keep some of our same recruiting mentality in looking for the diamonds in the rough (ala Weddle, Alex Smith, and so forth)."Take it to the Bank"

Arkansas, when they were in the SWC, recruited about 60% of their players from Texas. Now in the SEC they only get about 10% of their players from Texas. It will interesting if Utah will see a drop in Texas players. Also, given that the MWC has BSU now if BYU will see more Idaho players.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostThe real impact that I cannot forsee is if we can recruit Texas as effectively without having a conference rival in that state. It is hard to get them to leave as it is. I wonder if they will leave if we don't play in the state at all."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I don't understand the Arkansas analogy. Arkansas went form an all-Texas plus Arkansas conference to a no-Texas conference. What is there about the MWC that is more attractive than the pac 10 to Texas recruits? Playing TCU once a year?
Also, how much talent can there be in Idaho? When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Arkansas and Utah were recruiting two different types of kids. Recruiting SEC talent and recruiting MWC is completely different.Originally posted by SeattleUte View Post

The difference Utah will see in recruiting Texas is they will hopefully being recruiting a different type of kid. If recruiting in Texas, they will hopefully be battling Okie St., aTm, Texas Tech and not Houston, TCU and Tulsa. Then the pitch to play in the Pac-10 becomes even harder. There are very few kids on Pac-10 rosters from the state of Texas."Take it to the Bank"

I have been surprised the recruiting from Texas that BYU has been doing, especially recently. Like I said, it will be interesting to see to see if Utah's Texas recruiting drops off. Of course, I really don't follow Utah's recruiting. How many (or percentage of ) Texas players do they currently have?Originally posted by SeattleUte View Post

I think there are 6 or 7 kids on the 2010 roster; however, I think Brian Johnson, a native of Texas, has been assigned to recruit there along with Morgan Scalley. Morgan is a great recruiter and it helps that Brian is a native.Originally posted by Ted Nugent View PostI have been surprised the recruiting from Texas that BYU has been doing, especially recently. According to the Utah 2009 roster most of the Texas players are from the Houston area (8) rather than the DFW area (1). I would think that if TCU in the MWC had an influence on recruiting Texas players for Utah then we would see more players from the DFW area. This is not the case.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostI think there are 6 or 7 kids on the 2010 roster; however, I think Brian Johnson, a native of Texas, has been assigned to recruit there along with Morgan Scalley. Given that the Pac has a heavy footprint in California there might be an increase in recruits from that state. In 2009 Utah had 21 players from California so it seems that it already recruits pretty heavily from there already."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

This article mentions Utah's recruiting from Texas:
Allen Wallace, the founding editor of SuperPrep magazine, said Nebraska's departure for the Big Ten likely will take it out of the running for many Texas recruits.
"They will have to focus more on the Midwest, but they have always recruited nationally," Wallace said. "They will probably emphasize California more, too."
Rodgers said Nebraska, which recruited the East Coast heavily during its Big Eight days, probably will be more of an east-west recruiter than a north-south one, so he agrees the Huskers' footprint in Texas likely will decrease.
Even though the Big 12 appears settled for now, given commissioner Dan Beebe's statement last week that the league does not plan to replace the two departing members, realignment continued with Utah moving from the Mountain West to the Pac-10.
That could affect Texas recruiting, too. The Utes have recruited Texas heavily since TCU joined the MWC, getting top quarterback Brian Johnson from Baytown Lee and signing eight Texas players in 2010 and five in 2009.
"Utah has had some pretty good outfits," Wallace said. "They could really boost their profile in California if they end up challenging for the Pac-10 title."
That, in turn, could have ramifications down the rest of the recruiting food chain.
Wallace, for one, is taking a wait-and-see approach on the future of the Big 12.
"Will it end up being a better conference?" he said. "They'll make more money, but I don't think you can lose Colorado and Nebraska without feeling the pain.""If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I don't know how it will affect the recruiting class ranking, but I see the move getting us 3 maybe 4 players that would be an improvement over what we get now. Something like 1-2 players that we were in top 2-3 but lost out to the likes of OSU, Oregon, Okie St, Cal, et al. 1 LDS player that either ended up at Cal/UCLA before or was going to BYU, but now wants to play in a higher profile conf, and 1 player that we would not have a shot at before, but the coaches are able to pull off a major coup to land now. over 4 years that would be 12-16 better players on the roster than we are able to recruit now.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostHow big will the recruiting boost be? According to Scout, the lowest rated Pac-10 team in the 2010 rankings was Oregon State at 67. All of the other teams in the Pac-10 including Wazoo were ranked in the top 40.
Obviously with Rivals Cella will push hard for every kid that gets that coveted Utah offer to be a 5 star, especially since they are getting Pac-10 offers! But do you expect a top 25 class year in and year out? Top 30? Top 40?
Right now over the last 5 years Utahs average is around 60.
The big difference will be seen if we are able to compete in the upper 3rd of the conference in the first 2-3 years. I think there are some recruits who are going to take a wait and see approach, wanting to see how we compete once in the Pac-xx. If we can play competitively and excel in the conference, we should see a big boost in recruiting. If the results are lackluster, it will be a grind from a recruting standpoint."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
