When you are trolling 90 - 95% of the time, don't be surprised when you get a response as if you are trolling, even if it is an honest question. Sorry if I actually didn't believe that you were trying to stir up an honest debate, especially when you include in your initial posts statements like "coveted Utah offer" and claims that Tom Cella will be pushing rivals to up the stars of Utah's recruits.

My honest response is that Utah will have a better shot with some of the recruits that we targeted early only to lose them to BcS programs because they are BcS. We have lost a lot of kids that we recruited early and got interested to schools like Oregon St. I think we can keep those kids.

I also think that a lot of our decommit problems with guys like Huff could have been solved if we are in the PAC-10. I also think there is maybe 1-2 LDS kids per year that went PAC-10 that will consider sticking at Utah. It will help, but I don't see us some top 10 program. I'm thinking this puts Utah consistently in the 25-40 range in rankings with an occasional top 15-20 ranking in an exceptional year.

For much of this decade, Utah has been one of the best programs in college football. The Utes have won two BCS bowls, both in dominant fashion. They also can boast the best record (19-11) of any school from a non-automatic conference against BCS teams since the BCS was created in 1998, Lya Wodraska writes, adding that the Utes also have a nine-game bowl winning streak, the longest current streak in the country and the second-longest in history. Florida State won 11 straight games from 1985 to 1996 and USC won each of the nine bowl games it played from 1923 to 1945.

But the program was still a low-profile one because Utah didn't play in a "major" conference. That is now changing, as thanks to a run of excellent coaches the Utes have won by finding underrated prospects and developing them. But they've never had much luck reeling in the big blue-chip prospects.

Since 2003, there have been a half-dozen or so highly touted in-state recruits, starting with DT Haloti Ngata. Of this group, most are linemen (Nagata was followed by LB Lynn Katoa, OT Xavier Su'a-Filo, OL John Martinez, DL Bronson Kaufusi and DT Ricky Heimuli) and none have signed with the Utes. Only Su'a-Filo and Heimuli even took official visits to Utah.

The Utes' move to the Pac-10 not only gives Kyle Whittingham's program better traction with California recruits (Utah has already done quite well out west with DB Eric Weddle and QB Alex Smith among the Calif. haul), but it could do wonders for the school with the top in-state talent.

I spoke to former BYU standout Louis Wong, who is the coach at Utah's Timpview High School, a program that has sent a few star recruits to some big-name colleges in recent years. "I think this is going to be great, because now you're talking about a lot more exposure for the kids," Wong said. "I've had Xavier [Su'a-Filo], who went to UCLA and Chris Badger, who went to Notre Dame and a big part of the reason is because of the exposure they can get at those schools. Notre Dame gets to be on TV every week."

Wong agreed that the perception factor is huge with recruits and the self-esteem boost a program such as Utah will get from moving up to a glamour conference is significant. Part of the added appeal of partnering up with the Pac-10 for Utah will also be the chance for its recruits to get to play in spectacular settings such as the Rose Bowl, the Coliseum and Washington's Husky Stadium, among others. Wong recalled that in his junior season at BYU, the Cougars played at UCLA and he said was blown away by the experience. "I'm thinking to myself, 'Are you kidding me? I'm in Pasadena, playing in the Rose Bowl.' You just keep looking around and going 'Wow.' To play in those places, against those big schools, you're in awe."

Awe or not, Wong's team actually beat UCLA that day. And this Utah team should be able to play with the rest of the Pac-10, as well.

I think it will give a big boost to this years class. The following years I think will depend on performance. If Utah continues to win 8+ games a year then the recruiting rankings will continue to rise, if they don't the rankings will fall.

I'm not sure the recruiting rankings are the science that many want to make them out to be. Teams that win a lot consistently get higher rated players, teams that are average get average rated players, teams that lose a lot get lower rated players.

I think this is the part that was key for us and I believe it was even mentioned in the press conference yesterday. It is the thing that I think a lot of people are having a hard time getting their heads around. Other teams also been very good over that same time period, but ahve not grabbed the brass ring yet. I don't think yesterday happens without two undefeated seasons and two convincing BCS wins. I think those are the things that opened the door for us.

So we are at the beginning of a new cycle of information that will be hard to assimilate, just like Utah to the Pac 10 was. As we know, the first step is denial. So right now it is being denied that this will affect recruiting. What will the argument shift to when it becomes apparent that this is not so? It will start with "they are talking about Utah, sure, but they will never sign." Then when they do sign it will immediately move to "they are overrated and aren't going to amount to anything at Utah." Wait and see.

I think we will have little choice, but I do think new doors are opening. One thing we know is that we are great at developing talent.
