    Recruiting boost?

How big will the recruiting boost be? According to Scout, the lowest rated Pac-10 team in the 2010 rankings was Oregon State at 67. All of the other teams in the Pac-10 including Wazoo were ranked in the top 40.

Obviously with Rivals Cella will push hard for every kid that gets that coveted Utah offer to be a 5 star, especially since they are getting Pac-10 offers! But do you expect a top 25 class year in and year out? Top 30? Top 40?

Right now over the last 5 years Utahs average is around 60.

I think the biggest difference will be the SLC/Provo LDS kids that will go to Utah instead of BYU now so they can play in the PAC 12 and be close to home.

To me there will probably be 1-3 more local LDS kids that now will choose Utah. It will suck because they will be some of the better local talent, 3-4 star guys. I am not sure how it effects their out of state recruiting. I still feel that if a kid is choosing between USC/drop perennial powerhouse here and Utah, Utah will still lose those kids. Same for BYU if they moved. The only difference being BYU would pick up the Manti Teo's, Kavengas, etc, that right now are choosing the lime light.

If I were Utah, I would be very careful of abandoning what they have done well in recruiting, getting stars in their eyes, and holding out for the long shots, only to get spurned.

I really see shooting for the moon as the only negative with the switch. Failure to land those true 5 star athletes might cost them some diamonds in the rough they've become accustomed to.

I agree with all of this.

I would add that I think it will help Utah with kids that they currently try to recruit but lose to programs like Arizona or Oregon State...maybe Oregon. That still happens a lot.

I think it will increase the quality of recruits...maybe depth.

I don't think Utah is going to get ANY kid if USC offers them. Not even a Utah kid. The Utah kid can go to USC and now play in front of family a couple of times during their career. So, it might work both ways.

In the end, I think it helps with instate and keeping some kids here that might have gone to Oregon, OSU, UCLA, CAL or UA. Probably doesn't help against USC...maybe OR.

I think some of the Utah facilities need an upgrade before it makes that much difference. The locker rooms and football offices are probably some of the worst in the PAC12.

An average of 60 and 2 undeafeted seasons. Just imagine what will happen if that average moves up to 40!

The real impact that I cannot forsee is if we can recruit Texas as effectively without having a conference rival in that state. It is hard to get them to leave as it is. I wonder if they will leave if we don't play in the state at all.

I think it will all depend on who wins more. Utah may see a slight bump the first few years, but if BYU wins more and is ranked higher, BYU won't be in any worse of a position. At least with the LDS kids. There will be no incentive for a non-Utah LDS kid from Washington to go to Utah, He'd chose BYU or Washington, if the 3 schools were the options.

I think Utah's edge will be in slightly better, non-lds out of state recruits.

I think the recruiting boost is huge. I can't be convinced otherwise.

Utah recruiting should beat Oregon State and Washington State. They've got a built in tie to the LDS Poly market. They have a better message to sell to the non-LDS California/Texas kid.

If they beat Oregon that would be great. Oregon has been recruiting like the dickens.

                            Harvey Langi gives his thoughts:

Utah’s independent news source since 1871, The Salt Lake Tribune covers news, entertainment, sports and faith for Salt Lake City and the state of Utah.
"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
