This is about the lamest argument I've heard for questioning a story. Why woud Rivals be breaking anything forthat matter.

I rather doubt it. One of the (many) things Oklahoma did not like about the transition to the Big 12 was the thought of having to put up with Texas's bigass shadow.

At least Rivals would be expected to have sources. Would you expect your local news anchor to have a source within a Big 10 AD?

Probably because their audience is hungry for the information so they're fishing around for information. LA Ute's quotation makes a lot more sense than Texas joining the Pac 10. They don't want to be playing in Eugene, Corvallis or Pullman at 11 PM. The Pac 10 essentially offers USC. The Big 10 offers Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State and the newly added Nebraska. Add to that the additional money the Big 10 rakes in and it would come as no surprise if Texas does in fact prefer the Big 10 over the Pac 10.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Think about it though, they really won't be playing on the West coast more than once, maybe twice, a year. The vast majority of their games will be either in their current time zone or in Arizona (I can't remember if AZ is on Pac. time or Mtn. time during football). We're talking about 1 or 2 games on the coast.

              • Pac or Big, neither Ten really makes much sense with Texas. The only real fit is the SEC, but I don't think they want to share that much of the spotlight.

                • Chip Brown lives:

There is no truth to reports that Texas and Texas A&M are considering the Big Ten. But A&M is still considering the SEC.

UPDATED, 5:38 p.m.: Texas, Texas A&M conference talks stall; Colorado joins Pac-10
                    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                    • From Brown's article:

But if Texas A&M waits too long to commit to the Pac-10, the Aggies could be put on the clock, possibly opening up their invitation to another school, sources close to the Big 12/Pac-10 merger said.

Schools that could possibly be considered for invitation to the Pac-10 in place of Texas A&M would include Utah and Kansas, among others, the sources said.

Chip Brown has an inconsistency in his article and he's apparently just updated that column from earlier today. He says that Texas, Tech and aTm met with Baylor to tell them that they're working on keeping the remainder of the conference intact. That doesn't jive with other parts of his article where he says that people at Texas previously told the coaching staff that they couldn't keep the Big 12 together.

Doesn't it sound like there's a strong chance that Texas and aTm hold things together?

If that happens, then BYU is in luck. All the Oklahoma chatter that I've been hearing has been about BYU being adopted into the BIG XII. BYU is the first team mentioned by most radio sports reporters, with the occasional TCU mention.

BYU is on the edge of a knife. This could either be extremely fortuitous or extremely bad.

IMO, the longer this goes on, the more likely it is that Texas, aTm and Oklahoma realize that they actually have a pretty good thing going (well, Texas and Oklahoma at least). I don't see aTm bolting if Texas and OU stay put.

And there's always the bomb that could be dropped by Notre Dame. Notre Dame changing its mind and going to the Big 10 would be a dream come true. All of a sudden, Nebraska has to stay in the Big 12, CU is already gone to the Pac 10, Utah probably gets the invite to the Pac 10 to round out a Pac 12 and BYU goes to the Big 12 North with Nebraska still in the conference.

Notre Dame... I wonder what they're thinking right about now. would Michigan, Mich State, Purdue, still play them consistently if ND snubs the Big 10 again? What about Notre Dame instead saying that it is joining the Big East. I know that won't happen, but it would be awesome to see ND be loyal to the league that has given it a home for basketball, etc.

I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
