I'm approaching this from the angle that BYU will pick up more fans, and thus have more viewers, if they move into a more prestigious conference. Currently many people in my ward who are college football fans are not that big on BYU. They like their Texas schools. I think that if BYU were to be in a bigger conference and thus become more of a big deal they might get some of these Mormon kids that live away from Utah to follow them. BYU might not replace UT as their favorite school, but BYU might at least become their second favorite and thus get watched more.

I have absolutely no evidence to suggest this would happen other than my keen sense of intuition and my amazing critical thinking skills.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

    • If BYU gets into one of the bigger conferences, one thing I will bet on is ticket prices will go up. I personally have no problem with that. Better product means higher prices.

Of course there is the possible downside. If BYU becomes a mediocre to bottom dweller in these conferences, eventually will fans stop paying the price.

Are BYU fans, for that matter all fans, in the long run willing to go to games where they are top dog against mostly bad competition or are they more inclined to go watch a middle of the road team play good competition.

Pac 10 likes you because you're a research school and you're not owned by the Mormon church. A good salesman knows when to shut up and stop selling. Don't oversell your case. The Pac doesn't like you for your fan base (relative to BYU).

Just to clarify, I am not selling the Utah fan base and do not think it is a selling point. Not sure where you even got the idea I thought it is. I am just wondering if there's any evidence that BYU draws TV viewers.

Hopefully BYU is reaching out to the B12 and working hard to establish some relationships.

It's good to see ole Art Director at work on other boards:

"If you invite Utah, you get a school that would have one of the smallest budgets and stadiums in the conference and is limited to bringing a minority share of Salt Lake market."

Yeah, I'm sure neither the budget or stadium size would change with a move to the PAC 10.

I'm not going to get into a debate about the minority share of the SLC market. Nobody in the public has any recent data, polling or studies to show that. The most recent was a Dan Jones poll years ago prior to Urban Meyer, the Fiesta Bowl and the Sugar Bowl and undefeated seasons and it contradicts what he says.

IF UTah gets in a BCS conf. and BYU doesn't, the market share in Utah might change. Right now though I can really think Utah's market share is equal. Not even with the BCS appearances.

I am kind of impressed that Utah gets the market share that it does in Utah. But you're right, more people will tune in if they're playing USC, Cal, Washington et al.

We'll find out on June 11 at The Pie. 11:30 a.m.

I'm kind of surprised that Utah can even field a football team in Utah. Shucks.

                          • Concerning market share: any idea what the Memphis ratings are for non-BCS Memphis games and BCS Ole Miss? Or the Denver ratings for CSU and Colorado?

                            • So how does the ACC's new deal with ESPN affect things with the Pac 10? If the Pac 10 could get that much out of a deal without expansion I don't see them expanding. But if ESPN is already dishing out all that cash to the SEC and ACC now, I can't see them getting the same kind of deal. Also the Pac 10 doesn't have the same amount of TVs. So maybe this pushes the Pac 10 to expansion.

Now there are rumors of the MWC adding Boise State too.

Yeah, I have read all those too. Seems to be June will be a big announcement month after all.
