That's because BYU fans actually went to the game instead of watching it from home.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI saw somewhere, a few weeks ago, the TV ratings for last December's bowl games (including the Las Vegas and Poinsettia bowls). More viewers watched the Utah game. I'm not sure where to go with that, but it is an interesting factoid."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Yes, paid attendance at the Las Vegas Bowl was a whopping 40,018, as opposed to the 32,665 at the Poinsettia.Originally posted by Eddie Jones View PostThat's because BYU fans actually went to the game instead of watching it from home.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

The San Francisco Bay Area has considerably more people than the Portland, OR area. It's not surprising that the larger population center would bring more eyeballs to the TV audience.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI saw somewhere, a few weeks ago, the TV ratings for last December's bowl games (including the Las Vegas and Poinsettia bowls). Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yes, but I was responding to the generally-accepted notion that BYU automatically draws significant/large TV audiences because of its church sponsorship (or for whatever reason).Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostThe San Francisco Bay Area has considerably more people than the Portland, OR area. I am not comparing anything. Just suggesting that the claim of BYU's attractiveness as a sports TV "eyeball magnet" deserves skepticism. I may be wrong, so if there's evidence to the contrary I promise to give it a look. No desire here to start an argument over Arbitron/Neilsen ratings smack!Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View Postthe two can't be compared.

That was part of my point. The Vegas bowl was sold out and I'm pretty sure the sell out was thanks mostly to BYU fans. The Poinsettia bowl was not sold out and I have no idea how many Utah fans were there but I bet it was less than BYU fans in Vegas.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostYes, paid attendance at the Las Vegas Bowl was a whopping 40,018, as opposed to the 32,665 at the Poinsettia.
Granted the two can't really be compared, but you (or some other Ute) brought up tv ratings in the first place. I guess I'm trying to say that using one point of data to prove a point is meaningless, especially when there are many other factors involved. Otherwise, I could just point out that Utah's BCS bowls are the lowest watched BCS bowl games in history, except for the pitiful ACC/Big East matchups over the past couple years.
The truth is that BYU has a very good viewing audience both in and outside of Utah. I bet that if BYU was in a BCS conference, their viewership would grow a lot more."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. I don't doubt BYU will get extra fannies in the seats, wherever they play. I'm just wondering if there's evidence that they add eyeballs to the TV viewing audience.Originally posted by Eddie Jones View PostThat was part of my point.
