Yeah, UO and UW are out as soon as a B1G invitation comes. Most folks, even PAC folks, see that as a forgone conclusion. It's just a matter of time. Not a good recipe for stability.

So, assuming this is true, I suspect we'll see a short-term (2-4 year) media contract and/or a low buyout clause. But how do they get around that grants of rights? The broadcaster would need some kind of protection. Or do they just take that out of the leftovers if it comes to that?

On the other hand, none of this could be real issues and the PAC is very committed to each other and the reason for the delay is due to the complexities of combining linear with streaming delivery. This is all so new that it takes a long, long, long time to figure out.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I still think the PAC is going to figure out a way to tough it out and make similar money to the Big 12, probably on a 5-year contract/GOR.

Yeah, I think staying together is most likely outcome (stay with what you know), but the duration will be shorter. Or the exit penalty will not be a killer.

        • "We're close to knowing where we're going to be, and I think we're close to a deal," Crow said. "I think that the Pac-12 media rights became more complicated with the departure of USC and UCLA. The media rights became more complicated also, as things always do because markets go like this. They're up and down, up and down. But, we have fabulous sports teams and the remaining teams, we're going to get a good offer. We're in the final stages of that process."
          . . . . . . . .

"There have been no discussions with the Big 12 conference on moving," Crow said. "I mean, there's been discussions between everyone everywhere on all things related to where our conference is going and where stuff's going to end up and what's happening. We are committed to the Pac-12."

              • It sounds like they are dedicated to the Pac-12. Good for them. In fact. I think the remaining 8 should continue sticking together once OU/OW leave. There is so much history in that conference. It'd be a shame to just let it die.

Fresno state, SDSU, San Jose State, Nevada, Boise State. They have lots of options!

Good for the PAC. They can stay the academically superior, athletically inferior Conference and it won’t hurt the Utes superiority complex at all!

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Correct. They were not invited to a conference that had Texas, they were invited to a conference that has Texas.

I imagined you would answer this way. So what you're saying is that universal claims like "never" aren't that universal. UO could end up in the Big 12 if it morphs into something different.

For the record, I don't think anyone here thinks that UO is likely to end up in the Big 12. So, it is a kind of red herring. Most think there is a chance that UW and OU bolt for the B1G and another bite is taken out of the Pac academic prestige.

Seems like the Pac is also morphing to the point where BYU would have been a good addition. Take Mandel's Mailbag today:

Mandel’s Mailbag: Can a school be a blue blood in football and men’s basketball? - The Athletic

The one school the Pac-12 could have added anytime in the last 40 years that would have absolutely created value is BYU. But generation after generation of the league’s presidents made it clear they wanted nothing to do with a church-owned university that’s not a research institution, just like they’ve thumbed their nose at Boise State. Now, they’re down to the likes of San Diego State and SMU, which would help keep the roster at 12 but will not move the needle in terms of interest from media partners.

I would add they don't add academic prestige either.

                          • I think if the Big10 wanted to take UW and OR they would have done it already. I think the notion that the Big10 is waiting to hire a new commissioner before offering, is nonsense. It still may happen but I really doubt it happens in the next year or two.

If the PAC12 somehow pulls a TV deal of around twenty-eight million with equal revenue sharing then the conference will stay together. However, if the deal is significantly lower, or if UW/OR becomes too greedy, I think Arizona leads the charge to get out. We need to remember that the PAC10 had unequal revenue sharing in favor of USC/UCLA prior to the last round of expansion. WSU's AD was able to get the votes for equal rev sharing once the UofU and CU entered the picture. Personally, I think this change was the catalyst for USC/UCLA starting to look elsewhere and taking off when the BIG10 showed them the money.

One thing I don't understand are those stating that the PAC12 will have to produce the games on streaming platforms which will reduce each team's payout of the TV contract. The PAC12 has its own network complete with production facilities already. Could those not be used to produce the games on Amazon or AppleTV?

                            • This thread is the mecca of Pac 12 media rights discussion. Nobody is as invested in finding out the latest as this group. I always come here if I'm wondering what's the latest rumor or public statement.

Anyone with common sense knows that UCLA/USC as a western atoll in the Big Ten can't last. The situation is totally unstable. What will happen? Who knows. All we know is the status quo can't last. Meat heads have been running their athletic departments, running them into the ground to be accurate. So, there's no reason to believe they have any insight that eludes those of us who look at this situation and say, this is nuts. It can't work logistically, certainly not a situation that maximizes UCLA/USC chances of athletic success.

Look what happened to Silicon Valley Bank. A six year old could understand why that failed. Never assume that people in a position to make important decisions know what they're doing.

Time is on the Pac 12's side.
