I'd just like to point out that once again, the MLB playoffs prove to be a crapshoot.
If you were ranking the AL teams going into the playoffs, the Royals would have been 2nd to last. Only reason they weren't last was because the A's were going into the playoffs on an epic collapse. Angels, Orioles, Tigers, Royals, A's. Nats and Dodgers were also easily the 2 best teams in the NL, both went out early. I'd put the Giants in the mix for the 3rd best team in the NL.
So here we have the 4th best AL team in the playoffs vs. the (at best) 3rd best NL team.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Why even have a playoffs then? In fact, let's just combine the teams and schedule them all equally and let them play out throughout the season and see who amasses the most wins.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI'd just like to point out that once again, the MLB playoffs prove to be a crapshoot.

I'm not saying don't have the playoffs, just saying that the MLB playoffs are a terrible way to determine the best team in MLB. They do need to expand the Division series to 7 games to diminish the chance of the worse team winning somewhat.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostWhy even have a playoffs then? No playoffs is perfect at truly determining who the best team is in any sport. It's the team that was best at playing through the playoffs structure that ultimately wins. To call it a crap shoot would suggest parity between the top teams, yet you go on to rank them by the measure you choose.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI'm not saying don't have the playoffs, just saying that the MLB playoffs are a terrible way to determine the best team in MLB. No playoffs is perfect, but MLB is the worst of the major sports at truly determining the best team. On the other hand, MLB has the best regular season for determining the best team.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostNo playoffs is perfect at truly determining who the best team is in any sport. I don't know...best of 5...best of 7...that's a lot better than what you find in football.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNo playoffs is perfect, but MLB is the worst of the major sports at truly determining the best team. As we expected, the NBA seems to produce postseason champions most aligned with regular season performance. The long format of the seven-game series and reduced likelihood of upsets on account of the high number of possessions have resulted in the best regular season team winning eight of the nineteen possible championships.
Vividly remembering the LA Kings’ and Baltimore Ravens’ unlikely triumphs, we naively assumed that the NFL and the NHL would battle it out for last spot. However, our analysis revealed that the MLB most consistently produces champions most disparate from their regular season performance. What is remarkable is just how bad the MLB playoffs really are. Owing to the length of its 162 game season, one might think that regular season performance would actually be a fairly good indicator – better, for example, than in the NFL where strength of schedule can have a huge impact – of the overall quality of a team. Given this fairly reasonable assumption, if you chose the eight best regular season teams, or even eight of the top ten because you require four from each league, and then just asked each team to draw straws to determine the World Series, the average winning team would be better determined than by the current system. Only three times has the best team from the regular season ended up winning the World Series. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression
