Paul George is averaging 26 ppg, making 44% of his 7 3pt attempts, grabbing 8 rpg, and though I've only watched one Indiana game and can't verify for how he's playing on defense this year we can accurately say he proved to be an elite wing defender last year and put forth far more effort on that end than Durant did. I doubt George shoots 44% from 3 all year, but if he can score 25+, shoot well, be an elite rebounder for a SF, and continue to play stellar defense, we might fairly start talking about him as a top 5 player and as good of a fit as the 2nd best to LeBron as anyone else. That would be crazy to see a guy make that kind of leap from where he was as a rookie.

And though I've long thought his defense was drastically overrated, Chris Paul is just downright absurd in the incredibly small sample size we have so far. The ESPN piece about Paul being able to look for his shot more while still being a facilitator was a great read. He is so good with the ball and makes the right decision almost all of the time. And I still can't believe how strong he is when he gets in the lane and doesn't get thrown off his path or commit silly turnovers. But with how valuable the PG would be to how that team is built, if Paul puts up a year of 22/12/3 with high shooting numbers and limited turnovers, how high would he be on player rank?

And about that LeBron guy...I posted earlier wondering what might happen with James this season, coming off a historic shooting year, 2nd title, 3rd finals appearance...surely there was going to be a drop off. But he also sat out for a month after the season, getting rest that he said he hadn't had in years. So far his shooting is at 58/50/80.
Still has to be Durant, IMO.

If there were an all-NBA draft, I think I would lean towards Paul with the #2 pick.

      • paul george had a massive year last year, but there is no way you can rationalize taking him over kd. he's a career 43% shooter who averages 16 per 36mins.

I don't know. If Love can lead the league in rebounds and be top five in scoring he still might get my vote. His defensive rebounding makes up for any other defensive deficiencies that he has.

Agree. Doesn't make any sense to see what George does over five games and project off that. But I think projecting Paul to be a little better could put him in the argument.

Paul George definitely didn't have a massive year last year. He's got a good start on this year, however.

                Anthony Davis 32, 12 and 6 blks.

                • For as well as Paul George has played early on, Evan Turner is getting 22 and 6 assists on 55% FGs. PER of 22.

                        • I don't get MCW. Last year at Syracuse he posted 39.3% fg and 29.2% 3pt. Then he hits the NBA summer league and looks like a total disaster, again shooting miserable %'s and averaging about 7 turnovers per game. Then NBA preseason hits and he goes 33% from the floor and 27% from 3, and again turns the ball over with reckless abandon. So far in the regular season, he's hitting 42% from 3 on over 5 attempts per game, turning the ball over just 3 times per game in 37 mins, and generally doing his best Oscar Robertson impression. How is this even possible?

Good question. Seems like a significant regression is in his future, but I thought it would have happened even by now.

I think so as well. Right now he's barely scraping above 40% from the floor, and is hitting just 67% from the line. There probably hasn't been a +40% 3pt shooter in the history of the NBA that shot below 70% from the line. The FT shooting is actually pretty in line with his college numbers, and likely suggests that what we've seen so far of his shooting isn't real.
