Tonight's meeting, the first between Cleveland and Miami this season, was supposed to be the Ghost of LeBron Future -- a chance for the Cavaliers to demonstrate to James how far they'd come since then, and potentially even the start of a pitch to bring James back to Cleveland as a free agent next summer. Instead, with the Cavaliers mired in a disappointing 4-10 start to the season that has featured more players-only meetings (1) than wins by double figures (0), it serves as a painful reminder that their rebuilding plan has gone off track. The culprit? The front office's failure to turn a bevy of high draft picks into production on the court...

We'd expect the five other first-round picks besides Irving to have produced about 2.2 WARP so far this season. Instead, four of the five have rated near replacement level with Anthony Bennett's sub-replacement production thus far during his rookie season dragging the group down. The deficit of nearly three wins essentially explains the difference between Cleveland's actual start and a .500 record. That such a large group of players is struggling suggests a systematic issue. Let's take a closer look at the other three lottery picks.

All three picks, Thompson, Waiters and Bennett were reaches even at the time of the draft. I liked Waiters, but he was a reach as early as he was taken. Thompson and Bennett were big risks as well. It's one thing if you take the right guys at the time and they don't pan out, but these three were predictable busts from day one.

Beasley with a very good game for Miami tonight. 17 points on 10 shots and 9 rebounds in 26 minutes. He's getting more and more comfortable with that team, and he makes them much harder to guard on offense. When he was on the court with James, Wade, Bosh, and Chalmers that was a great lineup. I wonder if he'll improve enough on defense to keep minutes away from Haslem when he comes back from injury.

Dubs have now lost 4 in a row and only have 1 win against a team with a winning record. Will be interesting to see what happens to them. Just a week ago someone at ESPN (Haberstroh?) was crowing about them potentially being the best team in the league.

JKidd has to be on his way out. Especially after his latest stunt. Last night he tells Tyshawn Taylor "bump me" as Taylor bumps him Kidd spills his drink all over the floor (why he had a drink who knows). The refs call timeout to clean it and Kidd uses that time to draw up a play. The Nets were out of timeouts when this happened. I don't have the video in front if me but it is all over the web.

Looked like he said "hit me" to me. I don't know why, but "hit me" seems more blatant to me. It's the same thing I guess. I hope the league comes down hard on him. Bush league. Funny to watch, but total bush league move.

Add that to him seemingly having no clue how to coach a basketball team, it's not pretty. This is bold, but I think Corbin might be a better coach than Kidd.

Marcus Smart now averaging 21/4/4 in only 27 mins (also getting over 4 stls per). Shooting looks improved and he's doing a better job with his turnovers.

The nets are awful. This is all such a huge surprise. Who would have guessed that a player literally weeks from being active in the league and zero coaching experience wouldn't make a good head coach??

I've watched his last three games where he's been on fire in the first half of each. IIRC, somebody threw out a DWade comparison (perhaps DH) and I think that's about as accurate as anybody. I don't think he's a PG. He can handle, pass a little and seems to have decent vision, but he's more just a strong, athletic, guard like Wade than a PG.

Funny how one of the teams who actually tried to put the pieces together to make a run this year fumbled the coaching job so horrifically.

The Kidd incident is a good measure of his ability to be a head coach. He's spilt, and all over the floor. Someone needs to mop him up.
