I guess the team likes Culliver and Wright across from Brock. I wonder if Ward won't start getting more snaps than Bethea later in the year. On nickel plays Bethea comes in and Ward plays the slot.
Carlos Hyde makes sense when you realize how long Gore has been around and the only other every down back behind him is Marcus Lattimore who damn near lost his leg two years ago. Dr. Andrews described the inside of the knee as looking like hamburger. Hyde was maybe the best back in the draft and the Niners rely on the run more than anyone else.
My favorite pick is Martin out of USC. Great pick, fills a need and maybe can be shifted to guard if Iupati leaves.
The lack of a d lineman hopefully means that Carradine is looking good.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yeah fingers crossed on Carradine. Though even if he's in good shape I still felt like there was a need in the interior.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostI guess the team likes Culliver and Wright across from Brock. I like the Ellington pick in the fourth round. I think that since the opening pick the Niners have consistently picked up talent that rated to a higher round than the one the Niners picked them up (other than Borland who has some major intangibles working for him).Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī
It can't all be wedding cake.

Final haul from the Alex Smith trade:
@Sizzle801: .@49ers ASmith trade = Carradine, DE (2nd, 2013)
Lemonier, LB (3rd, 2013)
Hyde, RB (2nd, 2014)
Borland, LB (3rd, 214)
Johnson, WR (trade)
Hard to evaluate when there is still a big question mark around Carradine, but Hyde seems like a guy who could be a long-term replacement for Gore, Borland could provide nice depth and I like Lemonier.
If you're KC though, AS led your team to the playoffs last year. This could be a win-win trade for both teams.

I'm curious to see where the strategy of drafting injured players and stashing them on the NFI list leads. I don't think we can gauge too much from Marcus Lattimore given the severity of his knee injury, but I really want to see what happens with Carradine.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostFinal haul from the Alex Smith trade:

They drafted three guys this year that will definitely be placed on the NFI list and the guy out of BC will quite possibly end up there also. Obviously, they don't have the roster spots for 12 players, but you either spend your considerable number of draft picks moving up, or trading them for better picks next year, or you use them. There was a little bit of trading for next year, but there was essentially no moving up (unless you call that switcheroo in the second round a move up) and they used all the picks.
Carradine and Brandon Thomas sound like they only tore their ACLs. Lattimore's injury was horrific and much more than the ACL and Trey Millard reportedly tore "ligaments" as opposed to "ligament." If Carradine and Thomas can get back to where they were before, then the strategy is genius because you're getting first round talent (and top 10 talent with Carradine) for a 2nd or late 3rd round price. Elite o-linemen and d-linemen it seems are much more difficult to find after the first round while it seems elite WRs, DBs, RBs, and LBs are found all the time in later rounds.Part of it is based on academic grounds. The drafting of Hyde has me less optimistic about Lattimore, though admittedly, that is me 100% reading into things.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostI'm curious to see where the strategy of drafting injured players and stashing them on the NFI list leads. Carradine is the guy to me that makes this draft a win or a home run for SF. I'm extremely interested in seeing what he is able to bring to the table. The rest of the picks are depth/ST contributors, but when you're adding 2nd or 3rd round guys as "depth" it means you have a pretty good team to begin with.

6 years, 110M for Kapernick. 63M guaranteed. Yikes.

With that being said, Russell Wilson should be very happy with this deal.*Banned*

Vernon Davis ends his "holdout" and reports to camp. Which is good, because VD is already paid like a top 5 TE.
Alex Boone, on the other hand, is still holding out, which is more understandable. He's definitely a top 5 guard in the league, but paid like the 43rd best guard. Boone is an interesting case to me, because heading into his last year at Ohio State he was projected to be a 1st round draft pick. He underperformed, and ultimately was arrested before the draft, drunk and jumping on/smashing the hoods of cars. As a result, he went undrafted. Talented guy, who apparently was able to turn things around. He and Vontaze Burfict are guys who show that sometimes talented players who go undrafted are worth the gamble.

I didn't watch the preseason opener, but Blaine Gabbert apparently looked like Blaine Gabbert.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Thats a nice stadium, SF. Thanks for letting us break in the goal lines.
Crazy fact: SF has never scored a single point in its home stadium.

Crazier fact: Denver is 0-2 against teams from the NFC West in the Super Bowl, and has lost those two games by a combined margin of 98-18.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostThats a nice stadium, SF. Thanks for letting us break in the goal lines.
