also, HATE the way the Jazz defended Giannis. He's great - the MVP this year, IMO - but you don't have to hand him an easy career night - at least try to make it hard on him.
If the refs are going to allow Giannis to lead with his off bal arm and then extend as he makes his move he is going to be pretty much unguardable. WHat scheme do you think the jazz should have used?

the Jazz were using the "he's great, but lets make it as easy as humanly possible on him" defense.

They didn't even begin to play defense on him until he was about 5' from the hoop - and by that time they are already lost. it was the basketball version of giving a WR a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 5 and doing it all game long.

while he didn't get his career high, it was effectively the most prolific scoring game of his career as he only played 32 minutes and was 1 point off his career high.

you don't want to guard an athletic non-shooter tight, but you have to come up and offer some resistance before he gets in the restricted area - with a guy like Giannis, you are going to lose and lose often regardless of what you do, but the way the Jazz were playing it, it was as if they were simply giving it to him.

He had many offensive fouls that weren't called. I haven't watched Giannis enough to know if he always plays like that and gets that kind of benefit. Or if it was just something he did to neutralize Rudy and this particular crew turned a blind eye. Extending the forearm to create space is the easiest offensive four to call and they missed it over and over again.

My son is a jazz fan but also a huge NBA fan and watches lots of games via league pass. He says that he has watched Giannis many times this season and has never seen him do it that often.

Maybe you're right but I am not sure it is that simple. His extended distance jump shot is not nearly as high percentage as his shooting around the basket. I think they were trying to abit him into more of those lower percentage shots. This was especially true once Gobert proved he deserved to be on the bench in that game as Favors is then the only defender in the paint and taking him out to the perimeter was not a good idea.

They don't have to be at full steam-- they are a great team. Any team is dangerous even when missing key components, and the Bucks are no exception. Guys step up just like guys on our team step up.

I don't think Rudy was as aggressive defending Giannis as maybe he would otherwise, but I think that was a counter to Milwaukee's apparent strategy of going hard in the paint and getting Rudy in foul trouble. Obviously they saw what he did to Denver. The refs weren't calling shit, so our defensive strategy tanked. It happens sometimes. But to see the guys really pick it up offensively with clutch 3s from everybody was a lot of fun.

Welp, there’s the letdown loss. Davis basically coasting through his mandatory 20 mins, but the Jazz decide to go easy and let the 2nd tier starters go off. And this is why they’re going to end up as a 6-7 seed.

                • Ugh. I guess we pretend we lost in Denver and pick it up from here...

Davis didn't play many minutes, but he made a difference in the second half when he was in. Honestly, apart from a few key plays when they were tying it up again, Gobert was not very good in this game. They clearly lost any sense of urgency. Maybe they are just trying to stay out of the Warriors' side of the bracket.

                    • Good bounce-back win @ New Orleans. And we won the game in the paint going at the Pels' strong point, with very strong performances from Favors and Rudy. On to Memphis.

Davis played 7 minutes in the second half, all at the start of the third quarter. When Davis left the game, the Jazz still lead. He was briefly put back in to guard the inbounds on the Jazz final possession. That was a bad loss for the Jazz.

I’m feeling better about the Jazz — they are 5th in point differential in the West and are tied for first place for road wins in the West at 12. I think they will probably end up in the 4/5 matchup in the playoffs.
