This is exactly why letting him walk if the only other alternatives are taking some salary back is not stupid. And I have to think the odds of getting a deal and not take salary back are really, really low.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostAl Jefferson has value, despite his deficiencies. Keeping him and letting him walk for nothing is stupid. As the new salary rules kick in, teams are going to be making some moves to get in compliance with that, as the new rules are more punative..So Russell...what do you love about music? The Jazz are slated to be like 50 million under the cap after the year. Elite players don't really come here in free agency. We have to build the team differently. I'm willing to take a bad contract back if it gets us a decent player. There's nobody currently on this team that's worth a max deal. Obviously they're going to have to pay some of these guys at some point, but I just don't see how they can pay max money to anyone in this group.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostThis is exactly why letting him walk if the only other alternatives are taking some salary back is not stupid. The Jazz are in no man's land. You have to suck bad and get a great player in the lottery, or you have to be great and make significant playoff runs. We're average, on the cusp of making or missing the playoffs. Not bad enough to get someone great. Not good enough to do damage when it matters. Getting broomed by the Spurs, Clippers, or Thunder does nothing for this team. Seeing Al completely fall apart when it mattered made me more mad last year.
Obviously management/ownership is telling them to make the playoffs, and Ty is trying to do that. Seeing teams blatantly tank over the years to get elite players has me thinking that's what they should do at some point. That's how the Spurs got Duncan. That's how the Cavs got Lebron. Hell, that's how Golden State avoided giving us their lottery pick last year. It gets tiresome to see teams rewarded for what I'd think is bad behavior, but they continue to do so.Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I still don't understand why I keep reading that because the Jazz play things so close to the vest no one has any good read on what they might do. Ford parroted that comment again in his most recent trade article. Are the Jazz making trades with themselves? When a team talks trade with Utah do they somehow become more secretive than they are with any other team they might talk to? Maybe they mean they can't corroborate a rumor with the two teams reportedly involved, but I doubt they do that with most of the rumors they hear of anyway.
I don't think it would work as a two team deal, but should Utah consider using their cap space next year on a guy like Danny Granger in a trade? Say that rumored Utah/SA trade expands to include Indiana now, and the Pacers get Splitter/Jackson, Spurs get Jefferson, and Utah lands Granger. He's going to make $14 M next year. But he can be another big scorer to put next to Favors, Kanter, and Hayward. That would be a ton of money to spend on him though with the PG spot not secure and still likely needing to bring Millsap back in that scenario. I hope info about a partial guarantee on Marvin's deal is true.
I do like the idea of a deal with Philly. Chad Ford said in chat that Hawes and Turner are available if it brings back a piece that can help them. Hawes makes $6.5 M next year. Turner is at $6.9 and then would be a RFA the following season if Utah made him a qualifying offer. If the offers was to send them Jefferson, Philly would have to send more salary back to make it work because of Jefferson's huge K. And I don't think Millsap + an expiring like Bell's deal would be enough. Millsap + Marvin?

Is it a team option or player option wrt Williams next year? I think this experiment has run its course."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault
"Once I seen the trades go down and the other guys signed elsewhere," he said, "I knew it was my time now." - Derrick Favors

Marvelous Marvin Williams has 24 points total in the previous 5 games before tonight. He's still scoreless in this one.
He's reached double figures twice in the last 14 games since coming back from injury. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

He gets time because he was a major off season acquisition. Certainly not because he's earned it with his play.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostMarvelous Marvin Williams has 24 points total in the previous 5 games before tonight. He's still scoreless in this one.

tbh, I don't think he's right. I know he's been cast in the 5th option/stopper role, but even at that he's not this bad.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostHe gets time because he was a major off season acquisition.
