Green isn't on the Nets this year. And no, there's no one I want. My impression of Brooks was his standout rookie season last year, but he sure hasn't been up to much this year.Originally posted by Maximus View Postis there even anyone we want on the nets? Id take some picks and maybe that green player.
My feeling is that there are two potential kinds of deals out there for the Jazz. The first is getting a young piece (like a Bledsoe) or decent pick while taking back a bad contract. The second is to just reshuffle pieces without getting anything worthwhile in return (like the Spurs and Nets deals) and saving yourself from a bad K. As much as Jazz fans seem to think there are teams out there begging the Jazz to take valuable assets off their hands in exchange for a potential half-year rental, I just don't think that's the case.
I do think the best possible targets are teams like the Bucks or Nets. Both could use a productive starter at the 4 and may be willing to give up picks to get that boost going into the playoffs where other teams wouldn't (especially since they'll be low value non-lottery picks). If one of those teams could produce a cheap young player (like a Brooks), a 1st rounder and then a matching expiring K, then maybe that's something to think about. But I looked at the Nets payroll and nobody (or combination) fits that bill. And I certainly don't want to take on Humphries $12mm next year just to get a late 1st rounder in the '14 draft out of the Nets (they can't trade a 1st this year b/c of the Wallace deal last year). Unless they can swing a three-way I don't see much to work with.
Jazz are clearly very protective of their cap space right now, and I'm fine with that. Cap space is always overrated in a small market and I'm not sure what they can get in free agency, but I think the real purpose in protecting their cap is to ensure they can retain Favors/Kanter/Burks/Hayward in the future. The new CBA is having an impact, as they've watched OKC and Memphis get forced to give up key players because of cap considerations (Gay was obviously carrying a bad contract). I was also just reading that Minny will probably lose Pekovic if AK picks up his player option. I think the Jazz are trying to position themselves for this to not happen to them in the future. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

It will be interesting to see what happens when G-Time and Mo come back. Where do Alec's minutes go? Last 5 he's been playing so well. 13/3/3 in 27 mpg on .511/.583/.846. Maybe Marv gets forced to the bench.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI can't think of any reason Marvin Williams should ever get minutes over Demarre. Demarre is better on both ends of the court, while Marvin looks more and more like a the 6'9" CJ Miles the Jazz signed this summer. So Russell...what do you love about music? I'm thinking Burks has been auditioning for trade partners.

I'd rather get something than nothing for letting someone go. And not trading them increases the chance we resign at leastone of them.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostAs I said to douger, how do you know better alternatives are out there than just letting guys walks at the end of the season?
Also, this roster has exactly one player still on it from the 2010 season. Same old Jazz indeed.

But if the something you get isn't better than the something you would eventually let go, what's the point?Originally posted by Maximus View PostI'd rather get something than nothing for letting someone go. There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

How many teams are realistically in the position to do that?Originally posted by Maximus View PostI cant believe that no one is willing to give at least a pick and an expiring contract for Al.
I don't think Al makes much sense for lotto teams. I can't imagine he has much interest in signing with anybody but a winner at this point and teams aren't going to give up a lotto pick for a half year rental.
I think the best type of target for this type of deal is a team looking to move up in the playoff standing or a team just outside the playoffs looking to jump in. They may be willing to give up a pick since it will likely be low value and worth the risk in the situation that he doesn't re-sign. Now how many of those teams need a post player and have expiring deals to give away? Philly and Milwaukee are really the only two I can think of. Bynum's not coming back and with some post help they might be able to make a playoff push. Milwaukee is right in that 7/8 spot and gets absolutely no offensive help from their bigs -- all their scoring is carried from the perimeter and that's a bad formula for the playoffs. Al could really give them a boost, and since the already rely on iso-heavy play I don't think he'd really upset what they're doing. Plus, the could move expiring deals (Dalembert + filler) and still retain two elite defensive players at the 4/5 (Sanders and Moute) to rotate in around Al.
So I think there are potential situations out there, but even though I think he makes some sense for certain teams, I have no idea if they have interest in him.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Of course they'll re-sign one of them. Why wouldn't they? Who's the third big in the rotation next year, Jeremy Evans? No thanks.Originally posted by Maximus View PostI'd rather get something than nothing for letting someone go. And not trading them increases the chance we resign at leastone of them.
The only way they won't is if the cost gets ridiculous. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Al Jefferson has value, despite his deficiencies. Keeping him and letting him walk for nothing is stupid. As the new salary rules kick in, teams are going to be making some moves to get in compliance with that, as the new rules are more punative.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostHow do you know that's not better than the available alternatives?
The Jazz should have been all over trying to get a guy like Iggy from Philly when they were trying to make a deal. I'm sure they're thrilled with Bynum's typical injury filled year. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Millsap should just learn to like being the sixth man. That is a role he could dominate. he'd be the focal point of the offense on the second team and he'd be facing less dominant defensive players.
I'm tired of Paul giving the staredown to anyone who suggests he should come off the bench. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.
