  • So G-Hay looked pretty good last night, huh? I actually think he looked pretty good against Portland as well, though the shots didn't fall. I posted this in the Portland game thread on the Jazz board:

This is going to sound like an odd comment about a player who missed every shot he took, but I was actually relatively pleased with Hayward last night. He looked a bit more confident and less lost than he normally does. I also thought he took good shots and showed good awareness on D.

Did anyone else hear the Portland announcers talking about him? They were watching him in pregame and could not get over the way he shot the ball. Every time he touched it, they went on and on about how impressive he looked shooting it.

Hopefully that starts to translate for him on the court. Right now his timing on his jumpshot looks just a split-second off. Every shot appeared just a fraction from going in, and I'm feeling good about the fact that he'll get it going at some point.
Last night those shots started to fall for him, and his timing looked better -- there was no rush in his delivery when he got the ball. Hopefully he can keep it up.

And can I just say that when you guys rail on him for not having NBA athleticism, I'm not sure what you're seeing. Kid is significantly more athletic than a guy like Kal El Coober, and he's a far better athlete than Utah's gold standard at the 2-guard Jeff Hornacek. And even comparing him to our current options at the wing I think he's a better overall athlete than Raja and quicker than CJ -- on defense he especially has noticeably quicker reactions and feet than CJ.

IDK, I think the kid's going to be fine, and I think he has the skills. This is what Deron said about the other night:
"Just getting that confidence to go out and be aggressive," Williams said. "I think he's passive at times and wants to just kind of fit in, but he needs to take control of his game."
That's exactly how's he looked to me. Like he just wants to fit in, not step on anybody's toes, and is just playing to not make mistakes. When he gets over that and starts to show the kind of assertiveness he did in the tourney I think he'll be fine.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Houston would totally trade Martin and Battier for AK's expiring deal...right? OK, maybe AK's deal + Price + Fess+ Sloan.
Here's an amazing stat for you: Martin leads the league in both 3-pointers made and free throws made. He'll be the first player in history to accomplish that double if he keeps it up the rest of the season.

Even more amazing, perhaps, is that he's doing this while playing only 31.8 minutes per game. As a result, Martin's scoring average (23.4) looks good rather than amazing, but on a per-minute basis, only Kobe Bryant scores more frequently.
      Pretty impressive.

I have to agree with what you said. Gordon is going to still have some terrible games. His confidence has been broken up pretty good most of the year. He is a solid athlete and he hustles. Good combo. We have to remember as well, he is only 20 years old. He has a lot of growing up to do...and seeing what he can do last night was nice.

Very impressive, even if he doesn't play at all on defense. Having a SG that can hit it from deep and get to the line that much would be huge in the Jazz offense.

Make it happen, KOC. I promise to buy a car from LHM auto group to help cover the salary.

            • Hayward is deceptively athletic. Also, it's great to see two white superstars in the league like Deron Williams and Blake Griffin. The NBA needs that.

And I agree, time to bring Millsap off the bench. Probably well past time, but that's how it goes.

                = white.

Seriously, when people rag on his athleticism, other than skin tone I'm not seeing what they see.

He's really looked impressive going up for some rebounds the past couple of games. I haven't looked up what his no-step vert was, but he can really get up from a stand still during games.

                    It was 30+, if IIRC.

He also had a nice athletic play where he got called for a goaltend against the Clips, but that thing was a clean block.

                    • 30.5" no step (best in the draft was Wes Johnson at 32"), 34.5" max.

                      • I wonder if getting involved in the Denver/NJ trade talks could be a way to move AK's deal and not have to take back huge amounts of salary.

Would moving AK for Troy Murphy and Al Harrington be favorable in terms of talent this season? Murphy's contract expires at the end of the year, so that'd be $12 M coming off the books. Harrington has the 5 year, $34 M contract he signed this off-season.

Utah's trade exceptions from Harpring and Maynor have already expired. They still have the 3 small exceptions from Brewer, Koufos, and Boozer.

They have supposedly been contacted in connection with the denver/nj melo discussions.

                          • AK Driving me batshit crazy as is Al. The starters look like shit. Deron playing as bad as he did against NO. You'd think they'd be motivated watching the bench absolutely out-playing them but they seem uninterested.

                            • These starters better figure out how to play some semblance of defense, interior or perimeter, or they will lose to these scrubs. Deron looks disinterested inplaying defense. He seems to be gimpy which might explain that.

                              • Rookie playing with a lot of confidence. He and Deron helped the team avoid a near-headscratching loss. Cold as Hell outside tonight.
