    Seriously!

Actually - kind of made me chuckle reading Dougar's post about Corbin not playing the new guys more and dumping guys like Jefferson. A couple of games back when the Jazz were losing to the Clipper's bench, one of the issues brought up by the local radio hacks the next day was that the group the Clippers threw out was full of veterans who knew what they were doing, and the Jazz has no real veteran leadership. Who from the Jazz has been in the playoffs and played a significant role?

The young guys just aren't prepared for playoff basketball and need a couple of veterans around to provide some stability and experience. The end of the season has become playoff basketball, and the Jazz are paying.

They had the chance to add a veteran piece last year during the summer and chose not to. They had a lot of cap space that went unused, and it was stupid of Dennis Lindsay to not use it, because everyone will have cash this year to spend.

I laugh that you guys think Jefferson was good. He was a sieve defensively.

You guys can keep laughing that I didn't want Jefferson here, but for what he cost, you couldn't keep this team together and it was better long term to go with the guys who don't cost as much and who were more willing defenders.

If we needed another Trevor Booker or Joe Ingles on the roster to make the playoffs, last summer would have been a good time to do that.

Did you think Corbin was a good coach?

          Nope.

But I also thought he was put in an impossible situation, regardless of whether he was a good coach or sucked. Fans (me included, I'll admit) were saying that he should just sit the vets and play the new guys. Get them some playing time and experience. See what they can do, win/loss record be damned. But he knew he had to win some games and show he could coach or he would be out. So he stuck with the guys that he knew would get more wins than the new guys, at the expense of the new guys development to a degree I'm sure.

You also have to remember that Corbin came from Sloan's coaching tree. Sloan was always slow to put most rookies into very many minutes - especially early in the season. Locke asked him about it once and he stated that confidence was a funny thing and can be hard to get back once it's gone. So he NEVER wanted to put a new guy in the position of failing spectacularly, because he worried that those players would allow those failures to define them to a degree, and it would effect their future development and play. His perspective was it is better to ease them in, and it may take a full year or 2 to get meaningful contributions from them - but that will be better than having them fail, lose confidence, and need 3-4 years to recover and build it back up.

And took this view on both ends of the court. He didn't want a rookie going against the better scorers in the league because he didn't want them to get lit up and feel like they couldn't defend. If I remember correctly, Locke described the above after a game in which a rookie PG (don't remember who) was playing and doing OK against the other teams backup. But when the other team sent in their starter, Sloan jumped up quick and pulled the rookie. When Locke asked Sloan about it, that's when Sloan gave his explanation about wanting them to be in a situation to experience some success rather than have them exposed by one of the better veterans in the league.

So that's the rest of my long answer. I assume that Corbin, having played and then coached under Sloan, was aware of that philosophy. It had to have been in the back of his mind and played a role in the decisions he made.

I was sad for Corbin when he was out. I liked the guy and wanted him to succeed. But he wasn't a good coach.

I guess I should clarify. I get what you're saying about big Al. Not sure he's who I would want to build around. But he is who they had. So he is who they could use at the time. I agree that they needed to move him and get someone who better reflects the ideal of actually playing some defense and isn't a black hole on offense. I also agree that if the Jazz need a veteran for stability, locker room, leadership, etc, then it is up to them to go get one. Not sure what efforts they've made or who they could've gotten. But they need someone.

Once it became clear the Jazz weren't making the playoffs, last night turned into a best case scenario for the Jazz if you're a fan of the NBA and the Jazz. Jazz get the loss, Kobe puts up numbers, the Wizards beat the Hawks and the Jazz go from possibly the 16th pick to the 12th pick.

ping pong balls, baby! I can feel it - this is the year magic happens for the Jazz.

That's the spirit! Also, they are a very young team that had a lot of injuries. The future is pretty bright.

Realistically it is no big deal the Jazz didn't make the playoffs, except to the Miller family. I think it means millions to them just amking the playoff.

It also means additional revenue to the city and state in income tax, sales tax, gas tax, and revenue to local hotels and restaurants. But you already knew that.

I knew that after you reminded me of it. That takes it from no big deal status in my mind, to big deal. I Like revenue and taxes coming into the city and state.

Are they going to call this the Quin Snyder recession?

Notice how bad the team started playing after they started showing Sloan at the games and talking about him? Where is SloanHater when we need him?!
