That was a pretty bad half of basketball.

Smart move to sit Burks because of his foul trouble in the first half. That saved him to not play much in the 2nd half.

When are coaches going to stop with that nonsense? Player gets 2 fouls in the 1st quarter, so you sit him an extra 4-5 minutes in the 1st half even though he's nowhere near fouling out. And even if he eventually does foul out, what is the punishment? Oh yeah, sits out of the game...just like the team voluntarily made happen after he got 2 fouls in the 1st quarter. So dumb.

Yup, sitting a guy with foul trouble is one of those coaching traditions that rarely makes sense. Let's voluntarily take our guy out of the game because of the possibility the refs might take him out of the game if he keeps fouling. In what other area of our lives do we similarly punish ourselves to avoid the possibility of punishment? It's like not driving your car anymore because you might get pulled over and get your driver's license suspended in the future. I understand the psychological desire coaches have to have their best team on the floor at the end of the game, but the more rational decision is to just get your best players on the court as many minutes as possible -- usually not accomplished by disqualifying your own players preemptively.

Halfway through the season (well one game past halfway) and the Jazz sit at 14-28 and last in the WC standings. ESPN put out its forecast for the rest of the year today, and it has the Jazz finishing last in the West at 28-54. The tank is still alive.

And Jabari has dropped to #3 in the individual rankings. It's looking good for Jazz fans.

I think 28 wins is optimistic. The Jazz are playing near .500 ball since Trey entered the starting lineup. I think they'll get to 32. That still might be bad enough for last in the West but there will be 3 or 4 teams worse than that in the East (Milwaukee, Orlando, Philly, and/or Boston). The next 3 games are winnable with Minnesota, Washington and Sacramento all at home. Hopefully Hayward has a set back and can't return for another week.

                    Meanwhile, with the GS pick...

McDermott helped Creighton set a Big East record last night with 21 team 3's. It certainly isn't the Big East of old, but Creighton is playing some solid competition in conference (Villanova last night), and McDermott is averaging 25 and 7 and shooting 50/40/90.

50/40/90 and having perhaps his worst season shooting the ball with all the attention he gets and having lost the best post player from a year ago.

McDermott can shoot. I'm not sure what kind of scorer he'll be in the NBA (he's a great one in college), but at worst, he'll come in from day one and be one of the best shooters in the league.
                      I'm like LeBron James.

Rumors this morning that jabari is unlikely to enter the draft. Also reports that embiid thinks he needs at least another year in college. I've felt like jabari might not enter the draft for a while now. Embiid is a tough call because of his age. And I don't think mcdermott is going to be there with that gsw pick. Mocks seems to have him pushing near the back end of the lottery these days.

Why the Jabari rumors? Where do they come from. I just don't see him skipping a mission to play an extra year at Duke when he is assured a top draft pick. But who knows?

                            Just a tweet I saw:

                            Brett Poirier NBA ‏@BrettNBA 55m

Jabari Parker unlikely to enter NBA draft this year, reports Sam Smith. NBA executives feel he'll return for his sophomore year at Duke.
Would not surprise me at all and I've always felt like this was a possibility. Jabari is just wired differently.

Part of the rumor is that he's buddies with Okafor that is headed to Duke next year. The team would be incredibly talented and could make a push to be undefeated for sure. Worth entering the NBA draft a year late, especially when your reward for it is to get overshadowed by a freshman teammate?

Fact: today's rumors are coming from "NBA executives." Nothing directly from Jabari or anyone close to him.

Theory: NBA GMs prefer for other NBA teams to believe that this draft is not all its cracked up to be. Such NBA GMs start telling reporters that they don't think Jabari and Embiid will enter the draft. Story is published. NBA GMs call other NBA GMs to inquire about moving up in the not-so-strong draft for a better price.

I seem to remember Jabari saying something like "I would enter the draft out of HS if the rules didn't prohibit it." But I can't find the quote, so maybe I'm mis-remembering.
