I actually think his body is quite a bit different than his brothers. I'm not sure he can put on much bulk, but he can certainly get a bit stronger. I'm going to chalk this up to limited time post-mission before the season started.

Haws doesn't strike me as a lazy or unmotivated kid. I think we will see the best he has to offer physically at the start of next season.

I'm a red blooded American through and through Monstah. I see him as a liability in the sense he does not consistently play the whole game. In contrast, though undersized and sometimes reckless, Emery maximizes his talent on both ends of the floor all game long. He's a menace in a good way (ways that make a Utah coach so angry, he cowardly won't schedule a game against his team's rival). Haws often seems in his own world, uninterested in anything other than his own play—the pouting he did last night after every stupid play is selfish. You could hear the exasperation of a coach in Clevelands voice last night while commenting.

Moving Haws to the bench would change the entire dynamic. Supposed "knowledgeable" basketball fans should 'know' that a sixth man, or first off the bench usually gets more playing time than starters (so, your great white hope might get even more playing time). It couldn't be done early in the season due to injuries and a lack of truly game ready depth. Rose isn't going to do it now though, because that's not his MO. This team will spend the rest of the season fighting for third place, instead of truly challenging the top two teams, until something is done about the rotation, or Haws decides to play both ends of the floor. I'm not holding my breath.

Let's ignore the fact that you just suggested benching Haws so that he can get more playing time.

When is the last time a sixth man in Rose's system got more playing time than the starters?

I'm throwing a bone to the Great White Hope crowd. The reason you bench him is so he can watch and see what's going on, and prepare him better to fill a role based on the tenor of the game. He can effectively play three positions, especially coming off the bench. By default he could play more and certainly learn more.

We both know Rose won't do it: third place, or worse here we come!

Before I get on board, I need to understand how this relates to Topper's overall strategy to build a team that would succeed in the post season vs the regular season. I hear you saying moving Haws to a sixth man role, where he gets more minutes than he's getting now but has opportunity to watch for a few minutes at the start of each game to get the flow. Good suggestion. I agree, this easily bumps us to second or first in the conference. But what does it do for us in the post season?

You aren't suggesting that Jimmer should've been benched because he didn't play enough defense. Or are you?

I would love to see BYU play better defense. That aside, to suggest that the college game is ANYTHING like the NBA and requires the exact same skill set to be successful is kind of silly.

                  So...if I understand you correctly.

You bench him so that he can play more minutes. But because he's been benched, he'll be able to watch and learn more by watching from the sidelines. Even though, you said that he won't be on the sidelines as much. Because, you know, benching him means playing him more.

I think we all had hope for these guys from Timp to come in and light up the world.

But let's be honest. They are good players. But they aren't "ready for the NBA now, just in college because they can't get drafted right out of high school" players. To expect them to light the world on fire fresh off of missions is ludicrous. How many players in BYU's history have returned from missions and had all-conference seasons the following season?

Mika is looking better than most anyone expected. Emery has improved from last year's beginning. And Haws is a kid playing his first year of college ball after being away from the game for 2 years.

Most of the guys getting most of the minutes are freshmen and sophomores. Let's be honest - unless you are one of the top 2-3 programs in the country getting the NBA refugees, that isn't a recipe for championship success. Regardless of how hard they try on defense.

I believe you're being cheeky, but oh well ... Due to the lack of depth on this team, nothing is going to bump it up to second or first place in the league. But now is the time to make the team as competitive as possible, and at least represent some kind of challenge to Saint Mary's and Gonzaga.

It was said last night that Rose feels bad for Bryant. "He just doesn't know his role." It's obvious he's not alone—or at least he's letting Haws try to dictate his own role. This team isn't headed for a post season, unless they go wild / get lucky in the WCC tournament. I'm not convinced BYU is going to even finish in third place.

                    • I'm almost convinced. I think if I read the phrase "Great White Hope" two or three more times I will be ready to bench Haws.

I'm pretty sure we've got third place on lock-down.

I prefer great red (or orange) hope, but that's just me.

Could (usually, possibly, may) play more—again, I'm throwing a bone to the Great White Hope crowd. He definitely could benefit from sitting, watching and being coached on the bench while doing so before entering the game, at the 1, 2 or 3.

If he gets any kind of indication he's a late first round pick, Mika should bolt for the NBA at the end of this season.

There is no one in the league that is a serious threat to bump BYU to 4th place. That just sounds like hyperbole. If you think BYU can be a little inconsistent, try watching the rest of the WCC not named SMC or Gonzaga.
