Also, the removal of the "hand-check" from legal play a few years ago has tilted the field towards offense and away from defense as teams adjusted.Originally posted by BlueK View PostNo one in the NCAA plays defense. The only league that is worse defensively is the NBA -- open shots made all the time there.
Seriously though, USF shot 24% from three, 42% overall. That's terrible for them. BYU gave up 75 points in 80 possessions which equals .9375 per possession. How does that compare to the rest of the NCAA? Well, The U. of Miami for the year gives up .937 per possession, which ranks them #28 defense in the country. UConn at #29 gives up .94. Basketball is an offensive game. You're not going to hold anyone to zero or never give up an open shot. Just because you see a few of those doesn't mean the defense for the entire game is atrocious. You're just not remembering all the good defensive plays. Fans see what they're looking for, but the stats can keep you grounded. BYU has struggled with defense in recent years. But the numbers show they're much better than they were three years ago. Give them some props for that. Numbers don't tell the perfect story, but if the narrative you're looking for is that our defense is hopelessly horrible, then the numbers shouldn't disagree by THAT much.

Before the rule went into place, the NCAA team scoring average was 67.5 points per game in 2012, the lowest in more than two decades. That average is 74 points per game so far this season. A team scoring 67.5 PPG this season would be ranked 288 out of 347 total teams - only 17th percentile.

great point. When Tyler Haws played it was popular and often allowed for opponents to grab and bodyslam him when he didn't have the ball. You don't see that kind of "defense" allowed anymore, which is great for BYU in general.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View PostAlso, the removal of the "hand-check" from legal play a few years ago has tilted the field towards offense and away from defense as teams adjusted.

Haws stinking it up tonight. Sloppy passing, no defense, lousy shooting, behind the back dribble and loses the ball. Thinks he plays for the Harlem Globetrotters but looks like he's playing for the Lone Peak 3rd Ward teachers quorum.
LJ Rose passing up wide open threes because he can't hit the broadside of a barn.
Braiden Shaw misses the most wide open layup in the history of layups.
This team is just too sloppy and inconsistent.

But at least they have a decent "defensive" rating which has absolutely nothing to do with elevation at which they play their home games or the size of their gym as compared to every other team in the conference.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View PostHaws stinking it up tonight. Emery frustrates me more than any BYU player in a long time. Such a dummy.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

He's being asked to play defense and be a facilitator and his response is to do nothing but play terrible defense, shoot completely idiotic shots, and turn the ball over.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostEmery frustrates me more than any BYU player in a long time. I just turned it on. Why are both teams in blue?
