Actually, the best thing for this team would for it to devise a strategy and rotation which could win the conference tournament. I haven't pondered what that rotation and strategy would be, but it should not be built on the best record, just the ability to win 3 games in the tourney. Otherwise, it is relegated to the lowly NIT."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

This wouldn't be a bad strategy every year. It would take a lot of strategy, but I'm sure we could do it.Originally posted by Topper View PostActually, the best thing for this team would for it to devise a strategy and rotation which could win the conference tournament. In fact, IMO this highlights Coach Rose's historical ineptitude in the post-season. As a die hard Cougar fan, the only thing I care about in hoops is post-season success and I am not sure why we continue to abide Dave Rose's historical divergence of leading BYU into the realms of national mediocrity.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThis wouldn't be a bad strategy every year. I thought of a strategy. Crazy but it might just work. Unrealistic. Better odds would be to rest Mika, et al the entire year and just run some plain jane vanilla sets. Then, come tourney time, unleash the starters and have a bunch of funky looks (1-2-2 zone, box-and-one, etc) that no one has prepped for because they haven't seen it yet. You'd maybe win one out of four years, but man that would be sweet when you won.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI thought of a strategy. Crazy but it might just work. Flubber.

I laughed at both your mocking and jay's flubber remark, but Rose does not build his team for post season runs. His rotations are often confusing, at least to rabid fans. His strategy of playing the run and gun to play entertaining basketball, win a majority of his games but lose in the post season when games tighten, defense becomes more important and reliable plays are a must, are a weakness, tied in large part to a lack of athleticism.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostIn fact, IMO this highlights Coach Rose's historical ineptitude in the post-season. As a selfish fan, I wish he would recruit and build the team for post season success. We may not run and gun as much, but winning in the post season is fun."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

I disagree, generally. I think Rose obviously has post season success in mind. And I think he's a good coach, for the most part. But here's an observation/complaint I have of Rose that kind of goes along with what you're saying. Rose will basically go as small as possible in a game. If he can put four guards and Mika or Childs in and win, he'll do it. He does that a lot when we're playing the crappy WCC smaller teams. Then he gets in a game with Gonzaga and is like "oh shit" we better go big, yeah, I think I have Kaufusi on my bench somewhere, let's see if he can play. I do not think he carefully plans out the need to develop a team that can go big/strong/power when he needs to, and he inevitably gets in a situation like that in post season play and we seem to be experimenting with big lineups way too late in the season.Originally posted by Topper View PostI laughed at both your mocking and jay's flubber remark, but Rose does not build his team for post season runs. I agree with this observation and believe you pinpointed one of the problems with is rotation experiments.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI disagree, generally. I may be misremembering, but it seems like he used to experiment with lineups a lot more early in the season.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI disagree, generally. He hasn't been tinkering that much with the lineup this year. There are some games he goes to the bench a little more than others, but the core group that gets almost all the minutes was set pretty early on this season. The only real change there was Bryant going into that group when he came back from his injury a few games ago.Originally posted by Pelado View PostI may be misremembering, but it seems like he used to experiment with lineups a lot more early in the season.
