If they could hit an open 3, we'd be in trouble.

63% of their FGAs in first half were threes. Wow.

Yeah, the behind the back stuff is a palate cleanser, not a main course. Too much and it gets old fast. Like pickled ginger.

That's a frustrating thing with wcc teams. They sometimes really aren't that bad but the rpi, pomeroy, sagarin, etc., never get the memo. Santa Clara #185 on sagarin going into this game.

Yeah they had a rough start but had been playing well lately.

                  • it's nitpicky because Mika is so productive, but when he has great position on the low block i sure wish he use a little jump hook from 4 feet rather than turning the shot into a 9 foot fadeaway that clangs off the front of the rim.

Caught an elbow from Mika in practice.

                      • Overall a very well played game by BYU -- the best of the season I think. Nice to do that in the first conference game. Carry that into tomorrow and then anything is possible against SMC, in my opinion. I watched some of the SMC/LMU game. SMC is efficient and good, but not unbeatable if we are playing our best. LMU tried to speed up the pace of the game and it helped them stay fairly close. Whatever happens in that game, the LMU game is probably even more important.

I think the non-travel partner schedule is much easier on the road teams. The two road games in three days I think inflates the home court advantage for the marginal teams.

                        • Best part of the game for me was Nick Emery channeling his older brother and completely shutting down a very good player in Brownridge. It took a toll on his offensive game, as he looked gassed, but man, he was all over the place on defense.

Agreed. Nice to see him commit to that. SCU had no chance without Brownridge playing well.

The difference in team defense is huge when one player accepts the role of defensive stopper. Especially against WCC foes that usually have one mega star such as Brownridge. Nick might be developing into the first defensive stopper BYU has had since Chuckie Ab-oo-WOW.

I also think that Nick is just a bit too short and erratic to ever be a dominant offensive go-to player. If he is expending that much energy on the defensive side it will force him to be a spot up shooter and slasher when opportunities present themselves rather than creating those opportunities. I don't yet know if Haws can develop into the type of player who can dominate the ball and create for himself and others but I believe it is more likely for TJ to be able to fill that role than it will be for Emery. If Emery can be BYU's 3rd scorer behind Mika and Haws I think it will make BYU better as a team.

I am excited on the news that Elijah should be back again in another couple of weeks. It will be good to get a chance to see him get comfortable with a role over the remainder of the season and how that will develop for next year.

I still wish they had redshirted Dastrup. What a waste of a year this year and to me the kid seems to love the whole BYU deal enough that I think he would have enjoyed a chance to be on campus 5 years with a serious chance to be the man the last two years. On the other hand I am beginning to wonder if being "the man" is going to develop so perhaps it is what it is. Perhaps his body changes just will not allow him to be effective playing for a team that plays the type of tempo BYU plays at.

Good to see Aytes coming around with a good game. He will be a key reserve for the rest of this year and next.

                              • I am feeling better about this team. TJ starting to click. Beo settling down. Yoeli steadily improving. Nick starting to play defense.
