I'm going to go out on a limb and say Rice has better players at UNLV than he would have had at Utah -- even if he had managed to get Clyburn and O'Brien to stay.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."
Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."
Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

I don't know about most Utes fans. I wanted an established coach like Bennett. I did not like the LK hire.Originally posted by UtahJazzFan88 View PostMost of the Utes fans (not speaking for myself) probably were paranoid of hiring another assistant coach. You are like most BYU fans who delude themselves that BYU made a decision not to go to the Pac 12. Bennett was approached by Hill, if memory recalls correctly there was an interview of some kind, and he said no thanks. He didn't want to come to Utah.Originally posted by Flattop View PostI don't know about most Utes fans. I wanted an established coach like Bennett. I did not like the LK hire.
You might as well be saying you preferred the other Coach K.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Yes, Bennett was approached and said no. "Like Bennett" means someone like Bennett for level of experience.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostYou are like most BYU fans who delude themselves that BYU made a decision not to go to the Pac 12. It's ironic, really. Before Boylen was fired people were saying that because of Utah's tradition and because of being in the Pac-12, Utah could hire just about anybody. Now people are saying we couldn't even have hired Dave Freaking Rice.
Utah is not a good job right now and there is plenty of blame to go around. Quick firings and a lack of stability are among the reasons for Utah's predicament. Giac had to be fired because he quit on his team and his team quit on him.
For some more irony, Utes fans said after Giac was fired that the next guy was going to need plenty of time to fix the problems, at least five years. The next guy won a conference title in his second season, and so, as a victim of his own success, was fired after year four because of recruiting mistakes and a failure to establish any kind of coherent offensive system.
Yes, Boylen failed at Utah, and the Utes likely would not have been much better this year if he had been retained. On the other hand, by standing pat and enduring one more bad year, Utah might have put itself in a better position to hire his successor. Utah might have had more money and might have shed itself of the reputation of firing guys too quickly. Maybe players like O'Brien, after playing two years, would have felt more ownership of the program.
Damn right I wanted someone like Bennett. I was told we could get someone like him. Hell, I would have taken Reveno from Portland. It seems we couldn't even do that well. Maybe we got LK because he was the only one willing to take the job. If so, that speaks volumes about the Utah job.
Well, he's the guy, and I sure hope he succeeds, but it is going to be a long hard road.Last edited by Flattop; 11-28-2011, 09:29 AM.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."

We had to fire Boylen when we did. The problem wasn't going to get better. The cancer wasn't going to go away. One DI caliber freshman recruit (MAYBE, if O'Brien really is good, big assumption) was going to take its ultimate, catastrophic, apocalyptic toll this season or next. The transfers and recruits that K has already attracted have already vindicated the decision to fire Boylen; we were in dire straits.Originally posted by Flattop View PostYes, Bennett was approached and said no. I hate to point out here that only 1 of those 4 recruits is from Utah.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostYou know what, I plead guilty to not knowing all the details about every kid playing in Sticksville, Utah and Utah County . His being in error appears to be a routine event here, but it doesn't change his shtick. Does he have a corner on the market on being insufferably arrogant while he is completely oblivious to the facts? That's a rare talent.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostGenerally, this is true. We had a good discussion in your absense, including of a crucial historical event. Thank you, or, more accurately, maybe, little thanks to you.Originally posted by cougjunkie View Post3 pages deep, I guess everyone is on to me.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
