The official Dave Rice is a better coach than Special K thread..........
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."
"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."
The truth is, Rice made a great career move; Utah would have been career suicide. I doubt he'd have taken Utah over UNLV.
UNLV is a perfect situation for him, as an alumnus fom the UNLV halcion days with a lot of sympathy from fans, taking over a team that was experienced, well stocked and well coached; the traditional UNLV run and gun style being what he did at BYU, local Bishop Gorman High perhaps with the most talented group of seniors in the nation, his brother the coach at Bishop Gorman, etc. The table was set for him there.
Had he gone to Utah, he'd have inherited the same four sub-DI level players from Boylen, the same overrated recruit in Matthews (Boylen seemed to have a talent for working the recruiting publications), the same Majerus shadow, and fans like mpfunk and TopUte and others with similar dispositoin and more clout would be eating him alive. A former BYU coach would receive a lot less patience than someon else. This is why so many Utefans were so against hiring him in the first place.
So, Rice is in the right place at the right time, and K is on the Bataan march. Junkie's post is like saying because in 1941 one guy was on the Bataan march, and another guy was in the U.S., going to college, thinking about calculus and Shakespeare, and living it up with beautiful coeds, the second guy must be a better person.
The fact is, Rose has less resources than K or Rice, he's never had as strong a recruiting year as K or Rice had this season, and odds are he'll be a lot less successful in the long run than either one of them.
This is a great post. First four paragraphs were right on the money. The last paragraph is bullshit of course, but no SU post would be complete without the signature jab at BYU. It's like goatnapper inserting a comment about boobs in every post. You just come to expect it.
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

You know what, I plead guilty to not knowing all the details about every kid playing in Sticksville, Utah and Utah County . BYU can have them all (except for the occasional anomaly like C.J. Wilcox); they have never been integral to our success. That being said, Rose has shown a strong talent for turning this kind of chicken shit into chicken salad. But the past couple of years he got a big hand from an extraordinary player (there, I finally gave Jimmer his due, 3D), though BYU never did do much on the big stage.
I was one of the few Ute fans that wanted Rice to get the job, and especially after it was reported that Randy Bennett turned the job down and the finalists were Krystkowiak and Gottfried.
Also: Dave Rice got a three year contract worth 400k/year at UNLV. Krystkowiak got a five year deal worth 950k/year at Utah. Utah would have gotten Rice if they offered him the job.

For his sake, I'm glad Rice wound up where he did. He seems a nice feller who deserves success in life, and most likely he'd have failed at Utah.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
Had the Utes hired Rice, I would have given up completely as it would have been a sign that they just simply don't care.
Right, because hiring the guy that couldn't get the Boise job a year earlier is a sign they care.
The entire process was just lazy and unimaginative by Hill. Hey Randy Bennett, you want the job? No? Shit. OK... moving on. Steve Wojciechowski is reportedly interested? Wait, he's an assistant coach. NO ASSISTANTS BECAUSE JIM BOYLEN WAS AN ASSISTANT AND THEY'RE ALL THE SAME. What about Blaine Taylor? To be perfectly honest, I don't even know who that is. Guess I'll just hire the guy I wanted last time. The Bucks fired him, right?

You don't know what happened.

You don't know that. In fact, the only certainty here is Utah would not be worse than they are right now. Who knows, he might have even bothered to meet with JJ O'Brien's mother.
It was widely reported that both Wojo and Blaine Taylor were interested in the job. In Taylor's case, he wasn't even contacted by Hill.
"widely reported" lol.
And you're the guy who just cited the Boylen apologist's last most cherished defense of their inept man. You won't even find anything in the press about K offending O'Brien's mom.
Come on. You're better than this. Personally, I think that with Odunsi and Storey and this 2012 recruting class K ought to be meeting our expectations given the devastation Boylen left behind.
You do realize that in four years Boylen recruited MAYBE AT MOST one true D-1 caliber recruit. And we don't know how good JJ O'Brien will be. Maybe he was good by contrast. He showed some polish and flashes of promise only. Has there ever been a record of such recruiting ineptitude? And then there were all those defections and transfers.
O'Brien left because he'd had a terrible experience at the University of Utah under Boylen (apparently O'Brien didn't give a crap about his team mates) and especially after Clyburn left he didn't want to experience a single digit win season. He and Clyburn would not have made this a good team by the way. You could tell after the loss to U. of San Diego last season in Hawaii that they cared little about Boylen as well.
WOJO, please. Not another one of those. You really think Taylor would be doing any better?
