Not even close to half as good.
Funny, I thought we were talking about majerus' coaching career:
    1983-84: NIT
    1984-85: NIT
    1985-86: NIT
    1987-88: Watched from home
    1988-89: 2nd Round
1989-90: really, we should count this as a 'sat home' year. But if you want to omit it, then:
    1990-91: Sweet 16
    1991-92: NIT

    Dave Rose:
    2005-06: NIT
    2006-07: 1st round
    2007-08: 1st round
    2008-09: 1st round
    2009-10: 2nd round
    2010-11: Sweet 16
    2011-12: 1st round

    Apples to apples and all.

EDIT: Remember that prior to Majerus' arrival, Marquette was going to the NCAA tournament nearly every year, including a championship in 1977. Majerus' arrival started a 10 year drought for them. He did have some really nice NIT successes though. I bet they really enjoyed those.

At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

1-0 in the first round game this year vs Iona. 0-1 in the second round vs Marquette.

Oh so now you're attempting to modify the official NCAA tournament definitions, just to make it appear that BYU didn't win a tournament game this year? Wow, you stop at no lengths...

Rose is a fine coach and may end up being a great one. I'd love to have him at Utah (both his parents are Utah grads, I understand). He had a very good season this year and got to the play-in round, but he didn't win a NCAA Tournament "round of 64" game. It's hard to compare Rose's early career success in play-in games with Majerius's early career, when (I think) there were no play-in games. If there were, Majerus never coached in one.

Has a tournament win always been attached to this new definition "round of 64"? This either an intentional slight or a serious lack of historical perspective.

Why not? You claim football didn't start until 1972 when talking about Utah/BYU head to head.

Is this a straight up trade? Can I get you to acknowledge the head to head bb record also? If so, its a deal.

Majerus' first two years at Marquette, the NCAA Tournament field was only 48 teams, whittled down from 52 and 53 (much like we get from 68 to 64 today). I don't think it's a stretch to say Marquette would have made the tournament in one of those years, and quite possibly both (and possibly neither -- I don't know what Marquette's record was in those years).

The standard for making the NCAAs was much tougher when Majerus was at Marquette than it was for Rose at BYU. Apples to apples? Try again.

I've always acknowledged head to head record in all sports. I have no problem pointing out that BYU leads in basketball and have never said otherwise.

If we are talking the beginning of coaching career, I guess we have to throw in whatever Rose did at Dixie St. We were talking about Majerus' career at Utah as compared to Rose's career at BYU. Rose is a very good coach, but he is nowhere near Majerus' level.

Last night pretty much sealed that argument. Majerus is 4-0 in 8/9 games, and his St. Louis team, man-for-man, had no business beating Memphis. Any BYU fans want to pull out Rose's record in 8/9 games?

I'm not going to get in this Rose-Majerus argument. Majerus obviously had a great run at Utah that BYU may never match.

But isn't this a strange comment? One game sealed an argument? A close victory in an 8-9 game? Majerus is 94-68 in five years at St Louis, and this is his first trip to the NCAA.

For the record, Utah is likely 3 years away from even getting to play a Preliminary Round game, so the discussion is somewhat irrelevant anyhow.
