First instance of academic dishonesty results in a chat with the student and a letter sent to the student with a copy in the archives. The prof will usually assign some kind of penalty (zero on the test for example), but that is it. Nobody is kicked out of school for cheating unless a consistent pattern emerges over time. The same is generally true for moral issues. But when an athlete is involved, all bets are off.

As much as I loathe the HC, I am going to wait until more details emerge before making a final judgment.

BYU basketball is on the verge of making history and the damned HC office in an over the top display of self righteousness goes and fucks the whole thing up because Davies likely. I can already hear the sycophants defending the decision, lauding the virtues of the Honor Code and the need to maintain the purity of the institution.

If the words BYU weren't encoded in my DNA, I'd walk away from it all and just eliminate the school from my life. As is, I feel like a hopeless addict who keeps coming back for more, perfectly aware that the highs won't get any better and the lows will only get worse. Damn, I hate you BYU.
Don't go over to CB then. Numerous posts saying things like "Imagine the burden the people at the honor code office must feel".

When my kids get recruited for baseball and football in a few years we will hold a press conference stating why BYU won't get the time of day from us.

Seriously, this whole situation is depressing me. I hate being a BYU fan sometimes.

          • I am guessing some dorky student turned Davies in yesterday. The HC called Davies on it with no facts just hearsay. Davies was honest and admitted to wrongdoing. The HC immediately dismissed him from the basketball team and is reviewing his status as a student. I am guessing he will be allowed to remain in school and be back on the team next year.

Davies would have been better off had he lied.

We'll know the details soon I'm sure, but I don't think this is how it could happen. I think the HC office only has authority to suspend or expel a student. I don't think the HC has the option to allow a student to stay in school but suspend them from athletics or some other activity. That's left up to the athletic office. Which really surprises me that the athletic office would kick Brandon off before the HC did. Is it possible Rose is a hard ass or heavily influenced by a hard ass? Loyd didn't get kicked out of school. Rose was the one who kicked him off the team.

Oh, I'd love to burden the HC office right now.

You don't think the honor code office has the right to suspend kids from extra curricular activities as part of their punishment? Or maybe told Dave Rose suspend him for the season and we will let him stay in school? Maybe you are right and Rose figured they better learn to win without him right now because you would hate to lose him in the middle of the NCAA tournament.

I absolutely don't claim to believe in any deeper principle relating to eternity that would would be in conflict with keeping a student in school after violating the Honor Code. I think deeper principles relating to eternity dictate that administrators do what they can to help kids stay in school, get there education, get the help they need to overcome problems, etc. Especially minorities at BYU.
