That is the night the bloom came off the rose. That elite eight run was after a very disenchanting season of underachieving and the level of interest began dying and in retrospect that was the first step off the peak.

It worries this one. Judging from comments on the UF.net board, it worries others too.

Trent Johnson should be the 5th or 6th option. The other former Nevada HC in the SEC interests me slightly more.

Johnson isn't my first choice but I will be happy if he is hired.

            • From ESPN Rumors:

Now that Utah has pulled the plug on Jim Boylen after four seasons and a 69-60 record, making it clear mediocrity won't be tolerated, who will the Utes turn to as their next head coach?

According to ESPN's Andy Katz, Utah is likely to go with a "more established name" for its next hire.

"Some early names that will likely be involved in the search: Saint Mary's Randy Bennett; LSU's Trent Johnson, who was an assistant at Utah and head coach at Nevada and Stanford; Old Dominion's Blaine Taylor, who previously coached at Montana and was an assistant at Stanford under Johnson and former Alabama coach and current ESPN analyst Mark Gottfried, who was an assistant on the UCLA's 1995 national championship team."

Another to consider? Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski. According to Katz, if Utah AD Chris Hill looks at assistants, Wojciechowski is ready to be a head coach and his wife is from Utah so it could be an excellent fit.
              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

              • Out of that group that Katz mentioned and including Tony Bennett, I would have them in the following order:

                T. Bennett
                Mark Gottfried
                Randy Bennett
                Trent Johnson
                Blaine Tayler
                Wojo

I don't trust going with another assistant. It should be an interesting week or two. C'mon Hill...bring it home.

I agree except I'd go with Trent Johnson over Randy Bennett, and I think it's close between Johnson and Gottfried. Johnson is a proven winner with a major program; hell at LSU he's even won the SEC regular season once; he put UN Reno on the map. He had some great teams at Stanford, and recruited well in California. I'd be patient and totally confident in him. He made a big mistake going to LSU, which was predictable.

BTW, Blaine Taylor was probably available when Hill hired Boylen. That was a big mistake.

                    • Some guy on Utefans is saying KUTV is reporting Huntsman will get involved in recruiting Rose to Utah. How can that be? Isn't that a conflict of interest given Huntsman is a GA? (Dig it, a GA more loyal to the U of U than the LDS Church.)

I want no part of an assistant coach. Besides, it seems like the Coach K coaching tree isn't much to write home about.

So I guess the U ditched the original plan to hire a well known, accomplished coach?

Blaine Taylor is the only head coach on that list without a Sweet 16 appearance. Trent Johnson did it with Stanford and Nevada; Gottfried with Alabama; Randy Bennett with St Mary's; and Tony Bennett with Wazzou.

I mean, none of them have the resume of a Dave Rice or Jeff Judkins, but it's what we have to work with.
