BYU fans can blast the Utah job all they want, but does anyone really think Lon Kruger or Randy Bennett say no if the Utes are offering 5-6 years at $2M per?

It will be interesting to see the terms and length of the contract. If the reports of Utah offering just a shade over $1M a year are true... well, it's no surprise that Krysto and Gottfried were the final choices.
I don't think you could pay more for the new BBall coach than what you pay Whittingham. If you were going to give 1.5-1.7M for the new coach, then Whitt would need to be given a raise to the same or better. I just don't think the $$ was there to pay the new coach big buck and raise Whittingham to the same level.

Ultimately, if fans are not happy with the money then they need to help by getting off their asses and their wallets and start to contribute to the athletic dept. While I think that much of the problem with contributions is that the Crimson Club does not pursue or value small level donors, that shouldn't stop people from pursuing it on their own.

I think most schools would look appealing if they were offering $10-12MM to a coach.

What happened to all the rumors of Dumpsman or the other "alumni" ponying up the cash? The way things have played out, Utah comes off looking broke and needing cash. In addition to all the other probs.

Was this is a money issue or a reality check? I know ute fans are delusional about their program as much as BYU fans are delusional about their football program, but 3 strikes in a row should probably remove any doubt about how the world views Utah basketball. It is much like the recent conference expansion when no BCS conference wanted BYU.

Trying to be un-biased but if I were a ute fan this is why I would have reservations:

                    2 years at Montana (assistant)
1 year at Old Dominion (assistant)
1 year with the Idaho Stampede (HC)
                    2 years at Montana (HC)
1 1/2 seasons with Milwaukee (first as an assistant then as head coach)
                    1 year at New Jersey
Now he is the Utes head coach.

(His NBA career looks very similar 6 teams in 9 seasons)

That is a lot of stops. He also has very limited college head coaching experience with his only job being Montana. His career head coaching record including the CBA and his short stint in the NBA is 110-106.

I see no west coast recruiting ties, his only ties to Utah are the one year he played for the Jazz. Also history shows that if he gets a better job offer he is gone.

The reasons to be optimistic his only college coaching gig he took his team to the NCAA tournament both times and won a game as a 12 seed.

His career record at Montana was 42-20.

He had a 9 year NBA career so I am guessing he has some knowledge about the game. He is also 6'9 250 pounds and hopefully can relate to these players better which in turn should help him become a solid recruiter.

Maybe this is the place he finally puts down some roots and and rides it out for more than 2 years.

For my ute brethren (including BO who I left off my list) good luck.

ESPN is reporting that the news conference is today. Obviously they are wrong but they are reporting its today.

Seriously? $2M would buy a lot of coaches. Boeheim's base salary is just over $1M. Coach K is like $1.2M. Howland is $1.5M.

I admittedly don't follow a lot of this as closely as a lot of folks here, but I don't think this is a bad hire. This is a guy most Utah fans really wanted 5 years ago it seems, and the only thing he has done in that time is bomb out of an NBA job with a bad team, which plenty of good coaches have done. I know Funk would prefer Gottfried, and I don't think Gottfried would have been a bad choice, but he just doesn't do it for me. In 10 full seasons at Alabama, he finished over .500 in conference three times. I get the impression that Hill went with the higher risk/higher reward guy, who may not work out, but at least gives you the chance of being better than the 6th best team in the Pac-12 every year.

I think that a lot of the angst comes from folks not like Funk, who wanted Gottfried instead, but from those who had totally unrealistic expectations. Guys who thought that Utah would be able to hire Rose or Kruger just to get them into the mighty Pac-12. Guys who were enraged that Utah wasn't pursuing Brad Stevens.

People who seem to know seem to think that a very solid staff is being assembled. If that is the case, I think this is not a bad hire at all.
