Without going into great detail, my understanding is that it would take an unforeseen change of heart across all fronts for Jimmy to keep his job. There is simply way too much smoke out there to suggest Utah isn't already seriously looking at other candidates.

Looks pretty good. What's he doing now?Originally posted by Top Ute View Post“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Thoroughly underwhelming when there was talk of guys like Trent Johnson, Bennett, and Theus but I wouldn't be upset with that hire.Originally posted by Top Ute View PostAs I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

If Gottfried is thoroughly underwhelming, you haven't done your homework.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostThoroughly underwhelming when there was talk of guys like Trent Johnson, Bennett, and Theus but I wouldn't be upset with that hire.
There have been two teams from the western U.S. that have won national championships in the last 20 years, and Gottfried was primarily responsible for bringing in the players that won one of them -- UCLA 1995. The man got Alabama to the Elite Eight -- no small feat at a football school -- and won big in a lesser conference in the Ohio Valley.
The religion card is an interesting one, but one worth trying out, because the upside is tremendous. I've been the biggest Reggie Theus backer around, but Gottfried's resume crushes his, Johnson's and Bennett's.

I think he would be a great hire but not because he was able to recruit top notch talent to UCLA. I think his success at Alabama was pretty impressive. Things went south the last few years but it he has proven that he can win and IMO Utah would not be as pressured an environment as Bama. I also think he would be fine with Utah's emphasis on being better at football than hoops.Originally posted by Top Ute View PostIf Gottfried is thoroughly underwhelming, you haven't done your homework.

It has been a long time since he was out west.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Point is, he's got a record of exceptional recruiting and he's got the W-L to back it up. I think Gottfried would be a great hire.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI think he would be a great hire but not because he was able to recruit top notch talent to UCLA. I was just answering LA Ute's question which you didn't refute.Originally posted by Top Ute View PostThe knife-sharpening is already taking place among BYU fans, a sure sign we have a winner on our hands. Consider me sold on Gottfried.
I said nothing of his coaching ability. I don't really care, but I'd ask Bama fans how they feel about Gottfried. Though I suppose Wikipedia is as good as any source for selecting a head coach."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

How do you determine that Gottfired was primarily responsible for bringing in those players? He wasn't even the best recruiter on the staff.Originally posted by Top Ute View PostIf Gottfried is thoroughly underwhelming, you haven't done your homework.

It wasn't worth refuting. We're not hiring a commentator, and I'm not interested in any salacious details involving his personal life.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI was just answering LA Ute's question which you didn't refute.

I did a quick Google search and could only find a couple of references (not in major news media, just in a blog or two) to the affair as an unfounded rumor. (Something I'd think BYU fans would be careful about these days.) Also, I think you are confusing him with his uncle Mike Gottfried on the commentator front.Originally posted by Surfah View PostTrying to rehab his image after rumors of having an affair with a co-ed by being a crappy commentator for ESPN.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
