Of course. I have half a mind to run some analysis on the number of teams that end the season ranked at least 10% of the time. I bet the numbers aren't all that dissimilar.

    • MWC as a football conference and as a BB conference has been about equal in strength. Middle of the pack in the MWC in FB puts you around #80 in the nation. Middle of the pack in the MWC in BB puts you around #120ish in the nation. That's probably about the right ratio.

There are probably not much more than the 120 FBS FB teams that we compete with in BB in terms of school size, facilities, fan base size, etc. In BB you add in maybe a couple more conferences and then a few more schools for a handful of other conferences (ie the Butlers, St Mary's, Xaviers) but you can't compare the whol 350.
Why have you come up with an arbitrary top 40/top 25 comparison? I don't think that comparison has any grounds in fact. The truth is, around half of all D-1 FBS football teams play in post season play. This creates an inaccurate view of where a team is in the pantheon of college football. Lots of average football teams play bowl games. This is not the case in college basketball. As shown by this year's tournament, the 68th team let in can be a top 5 team. Everyone who plays in the NCAAs is good enough to beat anyone else in the tournament. That's the top 20% of NCAA hoops. In college football you don't reach that "everyone is good" stage until you get into the top 25.

The problem is, the MWC has always been a stronger basketball conference than a football conference so you would expect the average rankings to skew that way. One of the reasons is that the MWC schools (many of them at least) look like the Gonzagas of the world more than they look like the Ohio State's of the world.

Not sure I agree. The WAC/MWC has produced several FB teams that have flirted with national championship. BB not so much. FB is usually ranked 6th in conferences behind the 5 BCS conferences. BB about the same on average.

            • The reason I put Roses' BB accomplishments better than Bronco's is in comparison to historical averages. I'm pulling this out of my ass, but I'd say BYU FB is about a 25-30ish program. And BYU BB is about a 45-50ish program. So Rose is accomplishing more wrt the long term expectation.

About as much as I believe that any Utah football team has deserved a parade to celebrate their natio-faux championship

He's never gonna see the court for UNC. He should have come to one of the Utah schools and he would actually have a chance to play college basketball instead of just practice with the future NBA guys at UNC.
