I'm not saying he is a good or even a great hire, he is just a better hire than Rice.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostObviously? You mean the guy who coached Kent State for 3 years and didn't get to the NCAA tourney even though Kent State had been 2 of the 3 years before he got there 5 out of the previous 10 years? Or was it Ford's 12-13 record at Muskingam that makes him a solid hire?As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

I'm more optimistic than you are. I believe most winning is believing you can win and the confidence that comes from that belief. BYU has been winning a lot in the regular season for Rose's entire time as head coach and has now started winning in the post season too. The kids currently in the program believe they should win games. That culture is hard to derail. I think Abuou, Hartsock and Big Game will teach the youngsters how to win and, as a result, we are highly likely to make the tournament next year (80% or so) I also think we might even win a tournament game next year (50% or so) now that the lid is off in that regard. I think the following year sees us back in the sweet 16 (as long as Davies is playing) with a possibility for a deep run depending on the development of Carlino and Harrison.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI agree with this. While irrational exuberance might be getting the better of me, I think that BYU is entering a bit of a golden period of hoops. I don't know if it is just an anomaly of talented LDS kids all at one time or it is that the growing LDS demagraphic is going to consistently provide more high end talent, but it appears to me one or the other. Do we all remember when Cleveland got BYU back to competitive and we wondered how BYU would look with all those mormon kids who were going to Stanford that BYU missed out on in the late 90's? Right now BYU is not losing those kids. It has helped immesurably that many of those kids are legacy recruits, but Demarcus Harrison is easily Nick Robinson or Julius Barnes. I think Rose's consistent winning, now finally on a national level, and his style of play makes BYU more attractive than it was 10 years ago. Now there are legitimate concerns that perhaps this is just all Jimmer Fredette greatness and the recruiting is more the result of legacy clout, and that BYU will regress to not winning an NCAA tourney game for another 17 years and not make the Sweet 16 until after I am retired. Time will tell, but I really believe that the talent is being upgraded and we will see BYU making a national level splash much sooner than we had to wait after Danny Ainge. I doubt many more Carlino's come to BYU, but the reality is the success of BYU is increasing the likelihood that more could come. BYU will be solid again next year and I think start building for some national runs following next year. I maintain that 2012-2013 is too early but I would not be surprised by another run to the Sweet 16 as early as 2013-2014.
However, if we lose Dave Rose then it could be a long wander through the valley of the shadow of doubt.

I'd be curious know why you are so confident of this. I'm not saying you're right or wrong, rather just that your position seems like a silly one to take considering Rice is an assistant, and the other guy has been mediocre at best. Who the hell knows which one is the better hire?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI'm not saying he is a good or even a great hire, he is just a better hire than Rice.
Because Rice is such an unknown - not having been a head coach - it would also be silly to take a similarly confident position in Rice's favor.I'm like LeBron James.

What it boils down to is Rice not having any head coaching experience. To Funk, any coach with head coaching experience no matter their success as one is more qualified than Rice.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'd be curious know why you are so confident of this. It isn't just that Rice is an assistant, it is that he has a mediocre resume for an assistant coach looking for a job. He has only been a top assistant (associate head coach) for a couple of years. He doesn't have a great coaching pedigree either and there is no information out there how Coach Rose assistants work as head coaches.Originally posted by Surfah View PostWhat it boils down to is Rice not having any head coaching experience. The other coaches that he has learned under are Stew Morrill, Jerry Tarkanian, Tim Grgurich, Bill Bayno, and Charlie Spoonhour. That makes 3 failed regimes that he coached in. The only impressive coach, other than Rose, that he has worked for is Tarkanian and that was at the end of his tenure at UNLV and only a brief period of time.
He has been an assistant for a really long time and no one has hired him, which is a huge red flag. It is the same red flag that Utah ignored with Boylen and they shouldn't do that again. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression
