It's not "ab-whoa" it's more ahb-oh-oo-oh, though the first "oh" is only pronounced slightly and the last three are all mashed together. Zundel is saying "Ab-woahw" with his hickish twang, and in doing so, he's butchering it just as much as everyone else.

I just watched the clip. First of all, Zundel is leading him with the pronunciation, so of course Abouo isn't going to say "no, that's not exactly correct."

To me, it sounds like Abouo is saying similarly to how most of us butcher it, except he's putting the emphasis on the last vowel sound. More like "uh-bu-OH" but a little more fluid so it comes out sounding like "uh-buOH." If you say it that way really fast, it comes out closer to Zundel's "ab-whoa."

Most of us are saying it "uh-BU-oh," which is actually (to me) a little closer to the original in terms of how the syllables are pronounced, we're just putting the emphasis on the wrong one. Zundel's got the right emphasis, he just mashes it all together. None of us are correct.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Agreed. Indy, your findings seem to be validated. That's a very interesting post.

Also, why the hell doesn't the MWC have anyone on the committee? Is this yet another thing I can be pissed off at Hair about?

Can we please get this deleted ASAP? Do we really need to encourage him to post more stats?

Do you think encouragement, or lack thereof, has ever really been a factor?

Why do you always answer a question with a question? Your response better not be a question.

Chris Hill used to be on the committee but clearly he does not know shit about basketball (see his last 2 coaching hires) so it really didn't help the MWC much.

No. But even my kids give up if I ignore them long enough. However, if I give the briefest, "let me think about it" I'm in for 9 more months of "can we get a dog, dad?"

I like that explanation more than Chris Hill hates mormons. LOL!

I think his hatred of Mormons has led him to piss off the ALUFs by hiring crappy basketball coaches.

He doesn't always answer a question with a question. Sometimes he answers questions with a stat. I take his answering a question with a question as an admission that he can't reach a high enough coefficient of confidence (or whatever that stat term is) in his answer so his lack of confidence results in a request for additional information.

                          • Chris Hill's biggest problem is that he has an enormous ego. He loves to find the diamond in the rough/under the radar coach that ends up being a great coach. He has done this successfully in football with Urban and with getting and keeping Whittingham.

In basketball, he has failed miserably because Giaccoletti and Boylen have been bad hires. I actually think Boylen is a great coach but his style is tailored more for a mid west program and he doesn't recruit players in my opinion that fit or at least hasn't fit into that style of play.

I also think that the last two coaches did not have a lot of ties to Utah High School basketball and have been shut out on picking up any of the top ballers the state has had to offer. BYU and Utah State has simply owned Utah in recruiting in state for the last 6+ years and it has paid dividends.

Utah's next coach has to be more than anything a great recruiter that can get the top talent to stay in state or at least be competitive with BYU on the Mormon recruits like Nick Emery.

Perhaps I'm naive enough to believe that people can answer questions for themselves rather than being told what to think.
