I didn't see this mentioned so I thought I would...
I might have been the only person listening the other night but I heard Boylen say on his coach's show that they haven't run a single play for Clyburn on the season. Not a single one yet the guy, in admittedly only 5 games, is averaging 20 and 7. Not bad and something to build upon, IMO. Add in a true/athletic PG in Jiggy and it's a pretty good start. Both players arrived with experience and it has shown at least early on.
Boylen also said that this team free lances much more than the teams he's had in the past (which he doesn't necessarily like but would explain the 313th ranking in assists) but they are a much more athletic group. To me that means that if you can harness that athleticism and execute the plays the team could be pretty good.
This is what drives me nuts about Boylen. His team free lances? What??? Do great coahces (e.g., Majerus) allow that? I sincerely doubt it. But he seems to be OK with it, or at least to let it go on.

You have to admit though that many of his players have looked fearful of making mistakes rather than just letting the game flow, especially late in the shot clock. It's a balance that hopefully he can strike with better more malleable clay.

All teams freelance to some degree and all of the current great coaches allow it. Dean Smith was noted in his opposition to free lance play. Boylen allows the kids to play. Hopfully he restrains them within the system some and restrains them a lot on critical plays. His problem isn't that he lets them pick their own spots. His problem is that they stopped trusting him as a coach last year so he had to go and get a bunch of new kids. Hopefully he can keep the new kids trust.

Good thoughts, thanks. I hope you are right.

It depends on what you consider free lancing. Some coaches run very structured and orchestrated offenses with set plays on nearly every possession while others not so much. For those systems with less structure they generally have principles that they want to accomplish. Motion offenses are like this. Principles guide the offense but the offense allows for "free lancing" depending on what the defense is giving you.

You're right. I just have bad memories of Carlon Brown playing NBA star.

What a waste. He was a guy, as a BYU fan, that I feared after watching his athleticism in year 1. His regression, or more to the point, selfishness ruined any benefit you got from his athleticism.

It depends on the talent too. I am sometimes shocked at how out of control North Carolina seems. But they have some real thoroughbreds.

I don't know about ORU playing a tough schedule this year. Tulsa is good and so is Missouri State (or at least they could be good). Indiana State is not good this year (or at least they haven't shown it yet). Either way, losing to good teams does not make you good. Of course, it isn't clear whether USU is good either. Their only claim to fame at this point is that they lost to a BYU team with a high early season rpi and some national buzz. On the subject of the scheduling difference between ORU and USU, they appear to have similar sos numbers.
On the subject of Utah's loss to ORU, they shouldn't have lost that game. Boylen is disappointing me. He lost the kids last year and is heading that way again this year.
You know, I agree with you, but I am a fair person. I want Boylen's record to be fully understood.
I can take two losing seasons, if we're building toward something. I don't get the feeling he's building anything, though. The mass exodus and JUCO shopping spree last year really shook my faith in him. Even so, he really was fortunate. He put the program at risk of apocolypse. Just imagine if he'd missed on Watson and/or Clyburn. He's had four years to build a program and we seem to be going nowhere.

Interesting. Are you saying that you think Boylen's gonna go the Lon Kruger/Steve Fisher route?
And won't that precipitate problems from the administration with their academic raising of the bar necessitated by going Pac12?
Kupets was that Boise de-commit/panic pick up. JUCO.
It was kind of weird because I think they offered both him and Josh Watkins thinking that only one would come, but they both ended up committing to the Utes.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Seems like some bad coaching to me. Maybe they don't lose to ORU or USU if he runs some plays for his best offensive option.
