I admit it I'm gonna try to catch some Duke games to see Frank in action. Hope he does well.

I wish him well but the mentality that he is serving a mission is really parochial. I am living in the mission field making the gentiles love us mormon people! "Oh - I really want to be the one going to Japan like my friend is!" It is always a mystery to me why these mormons just can't admit the truth. He isn't going on a mission because he doesn't want to similar to why Jimmer Fredette or Danny Ainge didn't go. He is more along the lines of Steve Young so perhaps he is eying the EFY World Tour as pro hoopsters have the summer months off.

I like Duke cuz I like Coach K - he can probably still quote "The Definition of Leather."

Tonight I watched the the replay of Duke/Viginia St. on WatchESPN. Jackson didn't start, but he played a lot of minutes. His handle look kind of shaky at times, and he made a couple of bad passes, but he's quick, plays good defense and has a nice looking shot. He's going to be really good, and I wish him nothing but the best. He would have been a fool to choose BYU over Duke.

I don't hold the article title against him as that presumably comes from ESPN, but as with many such articles, I question its origin. Did Duke reach out to ESPN with the story idea? Did his dad? Maybe ESPN called Duke looking for ideas to hit their Duke story quota for the morning.

ESPN just published a national article dedicated to the Church's missionary program. It reached millions of people. That one article reached more people than the two years of every former missionary here combined.

If Jimmer had gone to Duke, he still wouldn't be playing in the NBA, and he also wouldn't have won the Wooden award and be a household name. Looks like he made a good decision.

Weber St, Davidson, SDSU, and Washington St all managed to be represented. And it's not like this is unusual. Bird went to Indiana St, Stockton went to Gonzaga (at a time when they had never made the tournament), Malone went to La Tech, David Robinson went to Navy, Pippen went to Central Arkansas, Nash went to Santa Clara, etc., etc.

Duke puts more players in the NBA than BYU because in a normal year their #8 recruit is ranked higher than BYU's #1 recruit, not because they have a magical ability to turn their players into NBA players. If anything you could argue that Duke players vastly under perform in the NBA, so top recruits should avoid them.

Frank is forgoing what could be one of the most spiritually enriching experiences of his personal mortal life for the sake of his personal ambition, certainly a tough decision for a kid with Frank's God given skills, and uses mormon corporate/marketing culture to defend it and an apostate, who regularly rails against said culture, holds it up because he wants to be out of step/march to the tune of a different drummer on a BYU sports message board.

Frank is being a mormon wanker and taking himself too serious if he thinks Jesus would prefer him on the front page of ESPN rather than helping some poor indigenous soul come unto Christ. I doubt knocking on "doors," or whatever sorry excuse for a barrier to protect a threshold exists in Ecuador or the Ivory Coast, isnearly as glamorous or pays as well but it will do the part about Frank that I believe Jesus cares about most more good. But in some ways Frank's acceptance of his "mission call" despite how much it hurts him to tear himself away from knocking on doors in Japan, is a product of the mormon culture when folks within in had to find the moral highground to explain Danny Ainge, Steve Young and the Jimmer.
