Yeah but did it baptize anyone? Did it imbue the writer with two years of unreplicable spiritual experiences and hardships?Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostESPN just published a national article dedicated to the Church's missionary program. It reached millions of people. That one article reached more people than the two years of every former missionary here combined.

He was allowed to thrive as a one dimensional gunner.
While shredding his way through the best of the NCAA like Arizona, SDSU, Gonzaga... How tall is he, again? Yeah he's probably undisciplined.

Two things about that article: 1. Frank probably really does want to go on a mission and really is jealous of his buddy. 2. Saying basketball will probably be his mission is probably something any of us would say to smooth over the cognitive dissonance he's experiencing by choosing Duke and deviating from his lifelong ambitions.
Yes, I can understand him and empathize. But he's not a cougar, so let the Duke institute program try make him feel better about himself- he's not any more part of me than some LDS player at Utah.
(BY THE WAY HE PANDERED TO UTAH AT THE END, LET US NOT FORGET. He's dead to me.

If you're referring to Burgess, I think he's one of Pope's assistant coaches st UVU.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI hope his career ends up like that one LDS guy (can't remember his name) that went to duke, flamed out and ended up several other places before finishing at Utah. He's probably selling real estate somewhere right now.
I also hope Duke goes 0-30 this year.

Yikes. Now the strawman comes out.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostFor all you know, Frank prayed about it (which he probably did) and was inspired to go to Duke. Do you doubt that he was counseled by spiritual leaders? It would have been great to have him come to BYU, but it's petty to continue dumping on the guy because he chose the bigger stage.

Yeah, it's not an either / or decision. He could have done both. He chose not to. Just own it. He put mammon first. That's his call to make. Don't tell us how jealous you are. In fact, you can still go, Frank. Door is still open.Originally posted by beefytee View PostIf the kid wanted to be on a mission, the kids would be on a mission. Exactly. Moreover, he is looking at this through a lens from 50 years ago (and I should know). In the day kids went to college for 4 years and college coaching was important seasoning for any later career, or at least it was believed. Now, however, the NBA is all about the athletic talent one possesses, as opposed to the coaching one has received. DOes anyone really think that any of these one and dones are in the NBA becasue they went to Duke instead of BYU or some other school? Of course not. They are in the NBA becasue they are amazing athletes who can always be coached, anywhere.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThis. Jimmer competed his entire freshman year, didn't even start. Basically NS just called Dave Rose a shitty coach.

That said, I dont care about Jackson. If he had gone to BYU I would have been very happy. But he didnt. I dont really wish him good luck, other than in a polite I-dont-really-mean-it way, but I dont wish him ill. He is just some other kid that doesnt play at BYU.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Stats based on admittedly limited sample size and from a few years back suggest that BYU does better than fine at converting talent into NBA draft picks:Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostIf Jimmer had gone to Duke, he still wouldn't be playing in the NBA, and he also wouldn't have won the Wooden award and be a household name. Looks like he made a good decision.
Here are the colleges of the All NBA first three team players last year:
Davidson
None
UCLA
San Diego St.
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Michigan St
Kentucky
Wake Forest
Weber St
Fresno St
Texas
UConn
Washington St
Villanova
Weber St, Davidson, SDSU, and Washington St all managed to be represented. And it's not like this is unusual. Bird went to Indiana St, Stockton went to Gonzaga (at a time when they had never made the tournament), Malone went to La Tech, David Robinson went to Navy, Pippen went to Central Arkansas, Nash went to Santa Clara, etc., etc.
Duke puts more players in the NBA than BYU because in a normal year their #8 recruit is ranked higher than BYU's #1 recruit, not because they have a magical ability to turn their players into NBA players. If anything you could argue that Duke players vastly under perform in the NBA, so top recruits should avoid them.
Nevada and BYU not only are on top of the “Best of the Non-BCS” ranking, but they are also the two best teams in the country overall based on this talent conversion metric. Also, although Colorado State and North Texas are at the bottom of this top 10, their conversion rates would put them near the top of any of the BCS conference rankings. Finally, Gonzaga and Memphis are not on this list, despite producing 3 and 9 draft picks, respectively, during the period of this study. This is due to when we control for the amount of talent that was recruited to these schools, their conversion rates are less than stellar.
