My opinion: Jax was an overrated defender. His lateral quickness was not great, and he was not that good at shuffling his feet and keeping a quick guard in front of him. He was outstanding at jumping the passing lane and had active hands and good off the ball awareness. His strength also gave him an advantage in positioning. But he's not the model of a great defender, IMHO.

Nick is strong like Jax but a couple inches shorter. His problem, defensively, will be that he'll be matched up with the other team's point guard, and he'll likely have trouble keeping him in front of him at times.
I think you discount Jax a little too much. He was the perfect combo along side Jimmer.

I agree that Nick could be better than Jax at every facet of the game. He's probably a better offensive player than Jax now.

So give us the list of all of the BYU b-ball players that were superior to Jackson defensively. I would be curious to see that.
When we were getting hurt by a perimeter player, Rose would move Abouo on him. The year Loyd played, he would sometimes do this with Loyd. That's not to say those guys were better defensive players than Jax, but it's an example of what I mean.

Recruiting Analyst Jerry Meyer had some great tweets last night:

Watching Lone Peak HS play is better than watching 90 percent of the college ball I see on tv.
Realignment thought: Pac-12 could add Lone Peak before the conference schedule gets going.
Seen Milton play. Nothing close to the basketball Lone Peak plays. Congratulations if you beat them.
Shouldve never watched Lone Peak. Ball not the same anymore. Huntington up 11-10 on HCYA.
Would have thought Dick Vitale would have been smart enough to get here an hour earlier and watch the epic high school team of Lone Peak.
Oversaw Leonard Hamilton writing a note to self: "Never schedule BYU."

I think LaComb has helped with Lone Peak recruiting. He was an assistant for awhile there and lives in Alpine. I suspect he is a damn good recruiter.

Don't forget the legacy recruits and the fact that these kids have grown up together and been playing together since they were little kids.

I'm sure that is the bigger factor. But it seems like BYU has done a good job of nurturing the relationship with LP. I think LaComb was part of that strategy. He isn't talked about a whole lot but I think he is probably a really good recruiter.
