He is hurt. I'm really wondering what his role will be. Demin needs the ball. Hall isn't a great off the ball guard, so we'll see

        • Here is my box score analysis for the Central Arkansas game. What a debut by Demin! I was skeptical of someone that tall running the point, but I repent! What does that mean for Hall? I do think he can be a shooting/off guard, as long as he's not playing hero ball and shooting shots he shouldn't. With a team this talented, he should be able to pick his shots. And from what I saw today, we do still lack someone who can penetrate the defense and create their own shots. Saunders has to start, but Knell wasn't particularly captivating, and could do better coming off the bench. We could still see Demin and Hall together, but no doubt if Hall misses several weeks, and this team plays really well, it's going to be hard for him to step into a starting role.

Other notes. It was fun seeing/listening to Jimmer, and honestly I would love it if he was a permanent part of the BYUtv cast (maybe he is, I dunno). Kozlowski didn't make an appearance and it was mentioned he might redshirt. I'm fine with the idea of that, but college basketball really needs to do away with the rule of playing a single second means burning that redshirt. It's way overdue to let them play about 10 games, similar in % to what college football players get. We started off slow, the first 5-10 minutes were a little rough, but when we got going, it was really great. At one point on TV they put up a graphic "25-10 run" when the TOTAL score was at that time, 25-10, . That's like saying we went on a 88-50 run over 40 minutes!

Without further ado, Egor Demin is obviously the Player of the Game with a very impressive PER of 36.9 (that's with my new formula with fewer points for assists, so very impressive). He led us in points and assists. I think a lot (or maybe just some) were worried after the exhibition game where he didn't score any points, but he can score, and if Jimmer is impressed with his jump shot, then so am I! He also had the best GSc (Game Score), and ORtg (Offensive Rating). His 4 steals were also very nice! I thought that he had 2 Turn Overs in the game, but they must have credited one of them to another player. Keita got the best TS% (True Shooting Percentage). Normally, I only consider players that had at least 3 Field Goal Attempts, but since he also had two Free Throws, I gave it to him! I know we're not exactly a post up team, but I do think there were some missed opportunities to feed him the ball in the post. He also had the best DRtg (Defensive Rating). He was only credited with a single block, but he clearly disrupted several more shots, and was a force on the boards.

Unfortunately, Dawsone Baker gets the first Struggled to Perform award. He was dead bottom in every single analytical category. Going 0-7 from the field was not good, so that really hurt is PER, GSc, and TS%. He did get 1 assist and 0 TOs, but still got the lowest ORtg. He also had the lowest DRtg. That's a double whammy to be both the wost offensive and defensive player on the court. I think he'll do better offensively and eventually find his shot, but it's his defense that worries me and may end up really limiting his minutes.

BYU is now 1-0 and #19 in Kenpom. C Arkansas is 0-1 and #334 so this will obviously be a Q4 win. Up next is UC Riverside, who is 0-1 and #164, which would just put them also as a Q4, but if they do well down the road, it could become a Q3.

Yes. I'm wondering how much more amazing he will get. As he gets more comfortable with the team in real game situations, I expect he will be even more so. Are we going to see him going to the basket more, which he appears able to do? Last night I was wondering what Cosic was like. Different times, different players, different positions, but I wonder about parallels.

I assume others are feeling similarly, but this is weird. BYU has always been a gutsy group of righteous grittiness that many times succeeded against expectations, but had a clear ceiling. Now with Demin, who is clearly far and away the best player on the court, and Catchings, Richie, and Boskovic, it's all so unfamiliar in the most excellent of ways.
              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This season is going to be so much fun.

                • I feel a little bad for Kozlowski. I would feel worse if he had actually chosen BYU initially, but he did end up here when USC imploded, and he was a huge get at the time. Looks like he's going to redshirt. I wonder if he's headed straight for the portal or if he's going to give it another year.

If Dybantsa comes it could be tempting to play with him. That’s assuming he’d get to play.

                      • Do they do that curtain drop every game?

The word "curtains" plays differently between the MAC and the dumpsman center.
