The enigma of the Utah fanbase is not what happens when the team sucks...but when the team is doing well.

The stats show that when Majerus had the Utes going to the Championship game, people still were not attending the games.

Same in 2004....people were still not attending the games.

That isn't smack. The venues really were operating at less than capacity at the highest point of the school's athletic history. Tickets to these games are very inexpensive, btw. Makes no sense.

I have noticed that Ute fans are very sensitive about this attendance issue. I admit that it is a very puzzling phenomenon.

Even the Michigan game pulled less fans than the average last year attendance. Wonder what's up with U Fans.

up until 06-07 those crowds would be sell outs at all the ACC venues. after 06-07 95% of capacity.

You're right. The BY is ranked 22 in the Sears Cup. Utah doesn't crack the top 50. The BY is currently 3rd in USN report for their accounting program. Utah isn't to be found. We prefer Creamery Ice Cream brain freeze.

Finally, one you do have, and yet I don't hear much about it. Could Cougar fans be nervous about next year and, as such, aren't crowing much about it?

Unlike most BYU fans, I have no delusions about my college and team. It is what it is, and thank God it doesn't appeal to the zoobie jarheads that comprise the majority of state of Utah fan base. How many turncoats come here and announce that though they owe all to the U of U, which gave them the life altering experience of college at a subsidized price, they are BYU fans, and donate 10% of their earnings not to their alma mater (think about what that term means) but to the institution in which thier alma mater is engaged in mortal combat on every level that counts?

In short, it's no mystery. 70% of the State of Utah hates the University of Utah, and feel nothing or animosity for a liberal arts education and science. Indoctrination is a powerful force. I will stipulate that the U of U has an unusually small fan base for a school of its size and reach. I'm proud of it! I'm proud the U of U doesn't appeal to your fan base, that your fan base hates it.

That these types of debates go on for as long as they do always mystifies me. They're not interesting.

A few things...

1. Why do you and U-Ute keep bringing up BYU?

2. Already stipulated that in lean years, fans will likely not come in the same droves as when the team is doing well. Thus, a 1-26 season would likely not yield great attendance. I wouldn't expect Utah to sell out the basketball arena this season.

Please explain why Ute fans were not attending football games in 2004 or basketball games in the late 90s. Why were these tiny arenas not selling out their $10 tickets? Where were the Ute fans? Why were they not going to the games? This is what I find puzzling. LA Ute suggests that, in part, the Utah Jazz is to blame. In 2004, are people going to Jazz games instead of Ute football games?
