I grew up going to basketball games at the Huntsmen Center -- when it was known as the Special Events Center -- and yet I didn't realize until recently, thanks to certain posters at UF.N and now here, what a dump the place is.

I am happy that the MC has bleacher seats that way we can fit in more fans, the HC does not need to worry about that as they never get even close to capacity unless of course BYU is there and fills most of the upper section.

What was Larry H. Miller thinking not putting bleachers in the Delta Center, er Energy Solutions Arena?

Interesting things I have learned from this thread:

1. BYU has more fans than Utah. Also, in a late breaking story, the sun is larger than the earth.

2. Cougjunkie is the Tevye of CUF. TRADITION!!!!

3. Utah fans should collectively hang our heads in shame, because the Huntsman was not sold out for every game of the Majerus era. Averaging enough fans to be in the top 25 in attendance every year from 1991-2001 isn't enough.

I've always thought that hoops attendance at the U is directly impacted by three things - pathetic student support (we put the UTE in commute!), the ever encroaching BYU fanbase (the masses are asses), and the Utah Jazz (thank L. Harry Miller). I think the biggest factor is the Jazz.

Just for kicks, here's the list of the top 25 teams in attendance for 2008:

1. Kentucky
2. North Carolina
3. Syracuse
4. Tennessee
5. Louisville
6. Maryland
7. Wisconsin

Final thought is that if you average 12,000 fans at a men's college basketball game, you're in the top 25 in attendance. It's not like teams are packing them in all over the country, especially when there's a pretty good NBA option three miles down the hill.

I think these issues you raise are only important to the extent that Utah considers itself a "basketball" school (if Utah ever did, I am not sure...esp now when so many of its supporters are admitting that most people in the state don't care much for the school or its sports offerings). Perhaps that was my mistake. I was operating under the assumption that Utah considered itself a basketball school, at least until recently (of course, the same issues would be a powerful indictment against any claim of being a current football school, as well.....in-state disinterest, poor attendance, the dreaded Utah Jazz Pied Piper effect, etc).

No UCLA on that list. Interesting. In a sense, it's a badge of honor not to be on it. It means you've got other stuff going on in your city. Also, Washington fills up a small arena, and do you know what, that's how college basketball should be watched.

Now, the Marriott Center has the honor of being a place where Kenny Loggins fell off the stage during a concert and broke a few ribs, but when it comes to basketball, what is there about the Marriott Center that even comes close to what's happened in the Huntsman Center since both buildings have been opened?

I was at that concert. Light go out, dark, dark, more dark, lots of anticipation, still dark, dark, dark, okay, what's going on?, dark, still dark, light go up, kenny is hurt, go home.

The girl I was with was being a real butt, so not much lost.

Kenny comes back a few months later for a reconcert and I ask another girl. I got sick the night before the reconcert, heaving my guts, so I gave the tickets to the new girl.

Good times.

I also saw the Beach Boys there. Brian Wilson smoked like a chimney through the whole thing. Just sat there at the piano, big and fat, smoking.

I'm just trying to point out junkie's erroneous thought that the Huntsman Center has a "crappy" tradition.

The Huntsman Center hosted the 1979 Final Four and the championship game was the most watched college game in the history of college basketball and is considered by many to be the greatest in NCAA history.

There have been 81 NCAA tournament games played in the Huntsman Center.

There is definitely not a great fan base for the Utes which is proven by attendance, but the Huntsman Center blows away the MC when it comes to basketball tradition.

Now, the Marriott Center has the honor of being a place where Kenny Loggins fell off the stage during a concert and broke a few ribs, but when it comes to basketball, what is there about the Marriott Center that even comes close to what's happened in the Huntsman Center since both buildings have been opened?
