2020 General Presidential Election Thread

The way the system is set up in the US, there isn't any way to support more than 2 parties. Some third party may eventually gain prominence, but it will either wither or replace one of the 2 existing parties. The US presidential election process just doesn't allow for more than 2 viable parties. It would take a constitutional change to the process to change things and that isn't going to happen. 3rd parties could potentially become viable for congress, especially if regional parties were to pop up where regions feel marginalized, but with the influence that the presidential process has, it is still unlikely.

I just went and looked at the UNITED UTAH PARTY PLATFORM, and I really like it. I probably agree with 90% of it, but I'm going to stay registered as a Republican so I can have a voice in this state.

That's how I feel too.

I'd love to move to ranked choice voting. Then there might be a little more risk taking. But I don't think it would lead to more than 2 parties still. It works in places with a parliament and prime minister - not so much when electing a president.

To make a long story short, Democrats ginned up a letter from the chief actuary to describe a plan that does not currently exist. Trump certainly suggested he might eliminate the payroll tax, but then he pulled back from that idea and reiterated that any diversion for a payroll tax holiday would come out of general funds.

The ad refers to “Trump’s planned cuts.” But there are no planned cuts.

The ad cites “Trump’s plan.” But the actuary’s letter says it is referring only to a hypothetical plan sketched out by Democrats.

The ad asserts that if “Trump gets his way,” benefits will run out. But actually the letter says if transfers are made from general funds, no benefits would run out. That, at least at the moment, is what Trump says he would do.

That adds up to Four Pinocchios.
