Jonathan Haidt is definitely one of my favorite social psychologists of this generation.Originally posted by BlueK View PostInteresting piece from the Atlantic about social media's role in the fracturing of our society:

Lots of great quotes in there.
The U.S. Constitution was an exercise in intelligent design. The Founding Fathers knew that most previous democracies had been unstable and short-lived. But they were excellent psychologists, and they strove to create institutions and procedures that would work with human nature to resist the forces that had torn apart so many other attempts at self-governance.The social psychologist Mark Leary coined the term sociometer to describe the inner mental gauge that tells us, moment by moment, how we’re doing in the eyes of others. We don’t really need self-esteem, Leary argued; rather, the evolutionary imperative is to get others to see us as desirable partners for various kinds of relationships. Social media, with its displays of likes, friends, followers, and retweets, has pulled our sociometers out of our private thoughts and posted them for all to see.

I haven't listened to the actual podcast yet, but I actually love the description of how this was handled. Instead of engaging in the social media outrage culture, the guy used it as an opportunity to create a dialogue about why what was done was problematic. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Looks like the tweet he quoted has gone private.Originally posted by swampfrog View Post"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

There seems to be a backlash of at least a few pop culture icons against the rhetoric of Social Justice Theory advocates. Besides the Ricky Gervais performance and this Boy George tweet, there was also the J.K. Rowling tweet.

OopsOriginally posted by myboynoah View PostThis is dumb. The kid and his parents won't get any money. The suit will be thrown out quickly. And the kid is used again as a pawn in some weird culture war, this time by the #MAGA crowd. He loses, and his name will forever be known for ill. Now that is sad. The adults in his life are not helping him.

Andrew Sullivan says this is "genius". I haven't had a chance to watch it, but I trust him.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
