But he’s losing his job, and they are starting to get desperate, turning to members to ask for financial assistance housing. Due to the church’s guidance earlier this year, there isn’t much leadership can do for them, other than food orders.

The church sent a letter to leaders in January about immigration. It specifically said church assistance could be given for food and clothing. But leaders should not provide counsel or assistance with housing, transportation, or advise on their immigration status.

the church wants to distance itself legally from anything that can be see as harboring or encouraging undocumented immigrants to remain in the US.

That's a shift from previous positions. Sad to see. But I don't they are wrong to consider that this administration would retaliate for anything seen as bing too kind to immigrants.

The supreme is going consider whether or not birthright citizenship is valid. That's where we are. Pretty disgusting territory.

The Supreme Court definitely needs to decide whether or not something that is explicitly stated in the Constitution is constitutional.

I would be careful going beyond what has actually been said. There's no prohibition in that newsroom article about refusing assistance with housing, and the Handbook hasn't changed. Bishops still have an obligation to seek out and care for those in need. There's no indication that assistance is dependent on citizenship.

I thought that had been pretty settled by now. This isn't new.

Thank you. I have not seen any changes or examples where we have changed locally. And I think it is rather one-sided and far-fetched to think any action would be taken against a church.

They left a lot of gray areas in the way it was worded. In a stake bishopric meeting, our stake president spoke about those gray areas. One was that the housing issue only applies if we know that they are undocumented, and that isn’t a question that should be asked. But sometimes leaders can’t help but know. When assessing needs for assistance, certain questions need to be asked, about employment opportunities for instance.

The letter is not found in the LCR Communication library. I think it was sent only to stake presidents, to be forwarded only to bishops. The newsroom article summarizes rhetorical intent? But glosses over some of the details in the letter.

I think I think I got that letter as well. I have a stake calling.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

If you're a buyer, yes (as long as the U.S. does not default). But if you're the seller (as are all of us), then we are paying more to service our debt. The U.S. is riskier, hence buyers (investors) require a higher rate of return.
