When are y'all going to realize republicans and dems dish out the same sh*t and start voting for the Libertarians?

      • Interesting essay in yesterday's Washington Post, Where is the Mormon Church on Trump? History Demands Their Leadership. In 1879 the U.S. Secretary of State called for a ban on Mormon immigrants.

Back when they faced stiff opposition in the 19th century, some lawmakers worried that there was something even more sinister going on with the fringe sect located in the Utah Territory, especially as thousands of converts poured in from Europe.

Mormon immigrants, according to then-Secretary of State William Evarts, were “drawn mainly from the ignorant classes, who are easily influenced by the double appeal to their passions and their poverty.” He declared that “all who come to this country for the purpose of affiliating with the Mormon Church do so with the avowed intention of becoming criminals.”

Fences at a different location would not be effective for those Israelis no longer behind them.

Yes, it would not have made their theft permanent.

This quote from the WaPo editorial is the type of stuff that pisses me off:

It should be surprising then that leaders of the LDS Church have not yet provided an immediate response to President Trump’s executive orders regarding immigrants and refugees from Muslim nations. Mormon officials should be leading the opposition to these actions.
The executive order was signed on Friday afternoon. The WaPo writes an article the VERY NEXT DAY asking why hasn't the church provided an immediate response. W.T.H?

The church PR department then releases a very simple statement and now people on Facebook are freaking out because it wasn't strong enough. Umm, it's likely that the FP and Q12 met in their regular Thursday temple meeting and then dispersed to various assignments by Friday morning. The expectation that church leadership should be responding publicly as part of the 24-hour news cycle is beyond irrational.

The "theft" is no more permanent with or without fences/walls. Walls and fences can be torn down.
                  Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Unlike many of these SJWs that populate my social media feeds with outrage porn, the Church has actually walked the walk wrt providing assistance to refugees. When an organization donates $5m here and $5m there, pretty soon it starts to add up to some real money. To say nothing of the "I Was A Stranger" program that is being implemented locally at the Stake level. Meanwhile, the snowflakes sign on-line petitions and stew in their petty indignation. Drives me nuts too.

I agree as well. The Church, and certainly we, can and should probably be doing even more, but I think we're doing a great deal and I continue to be impelled by Elder Kearon's truly outstanding talk. Some of my closest nonmember friends date back to grade school and we still get together fairly often. We had several of them over for dinner during the Christmas season and I showed them a Church video, which is unusual since I haven't brought up the Church in conversation in decades. But they were deeply moved by the video and since then they've each told me they're becoming more involved in helping the needy, whether refugees or local. Those who criticize the Church in this area could spend their time more effectively elsewhere...

                        • If that quote is accurate, I am very sad.

EDIT: I can't find a quote of it anywhere, but I'm still looking. 5:09EST.

"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

It's mocking the White House statement on the Holocaust that didn't say anything about Jews and Priebus on the morning political shows today defending it by saying a lot of people suffered during that time period.

I've been trying to avoid the news, so I didn't hear about that one. I am worried about us.
