Kelly nailed it. Trump should talk less and listen to him more.

It was a powerful speech, especially because of the experience with his son.

It would have been much more poignant had he ended there. But he started flinging the mud as well:

And I thought at least that was sacred. You know, when I was a kid growing up, a lot of things were sacred in our country. Women were sacred, looked upon with great honor. That's obviously not the case anymore as we see from recent cases. Life -- the dignity of life -- is sacred. That's gone. Religion, that seems to be gone as well...
And a congresswoman [Wilson] stood up, and in the long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise, stood up there and all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building, and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money, and she just called up President Obama, and on that phone call he gave the money -- the $20 million -- to build the building. And she sat down, and we were stunned. Stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned.
The congresswoman is quickly coming off as a buffoon in this experience. She had every right to listen into that conversation, as she was invited in the limo because she was a mentor to the fallen soldier. But the tactful thing would have been to contact the WH privately and let them know that Trump's call came off as insensitive to the family. Tell them that the family did not appreciate the way the call went. A miracle could have happened and Trump could have done the humble thing, reach out and apologize. We wouldn't have even heard about the call, WaPo wouldn't have gone rabid looking for other Gold Star families, and we wouldn't have heard about the insanity of a president forgetting to pay 25 grand that he promised to a father. Another political scandal completely of his own doing could have been averted. If she didn't get a response, then fine, go public. Everything's political anyways.

And for crying out loud, be the better person and quit brining up a dead soldier for political gain. It's not that hard to do when Trump is the person on the other side.

I still don't understand how what he said was that offensive. "He knew what he was getting into when he signed up" could mean a lot of things, not all of them offensive. I really doubt Trump (as dumb as he is) intentionally tried to insult the family.

Well, it can seem insensitive, especially when the speaker trying to couch it is limited by a 100-word vocabulary.

The Prez and the Congresswoman are two peas in a pod; they make me sick.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

          • There is such a long list of things to bash Trump on. This one I agree shouldn't even register.

But reading comment sections on Trump stories is pretty scary...that is until you remember a lot of them are probably Russians. ;-)

I agree. I said before that I'm giving him a pass on this one. I don't think he was trying to be offensive. And shame on anyone in the press or politics who is alleging that he was knowingly belittling the soldier. But I can see how if it was a flippant remark (as Trump is wont to do), and if he allegedly couldn't remember the soldier's name, then it could come across as insensitive to the family. As in something like 'we are grateful for your husband's service, but he knew what he was getting into, though it's still sad'...

Yeah, Trump should not have said anything about what past presidents did or did not do, but this is something that should not be politicized. His conversation with that grieving mother should be kept private. Shame on that dumb congresswoman from Florida.
I can honestly believe the family may have felt it was insensitive, but there is no way he was trying to be. He's not just miraculously going to be good at consoling others. Everyone should drop the issue, and not overshadow the family's grief.

                    • I'm in a conference today in which I heard the following quote:

"I can never tell you what you said, but only what I heard."

I think that happens WAY too often (what is said, isn't always what is heard.)

The quote finishes: "I will have to rephrase what you have said, and check it out with you to make sure that what left your mind and heart arrived in my mind and heard intact and without distortion." Which doesn't happen near enough.

Quote is from John Powell, theologian.

General Kelly caught in a lie but Sarah Huckleberry Sanders says it's highly inappropriate to question it. Welcome to the world where the truth is whatever dear leader tells us it is.

                          • The headline is all Onion, the publication is Esquire:

                            http://www.esquire.com/news-politics...ump-president/
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                            • About tax "reform" -- it just seems a little odd to me that it's being reported that the Republicans in congress are annoyed that Trump essentially spilled the beans on their idea to decrease the limit by about 90% that you would be able to contribute to a 401k each year. Yeah, I get it that tax cuts should be paid for, but great idea.. Let's give a huge punishing tax increase to middle income folks trying to do things the right way by saving money for retirement. Of course it wouldn't hurt the saps who aren't putting away anything, but for those currently putting away money into their 401ks there is no way a slight decrease in the tax rate would make up for suddenly making thousands of dollars taxable that didn't used to be.

I do not believe that would ever happen. Nobody wants that.
